Port of Curacao

The islands' most important natural resources are phosphates on Curaçao, and salt on Bonaire.

The estimated GDP in 2004 amounted to 2.8 billion dollars.

The development of its agriculture is scarce due to poor soil and inadequate water supply, representing only 1% of GDP.

Its main industries are tourism and services (84% of GDP), oil refining and light industry. There are 122 foreign vessels registered under the flag of convenience.

Virtually all consumer products are imported, the main suppliers being Mexico and the US.

Per capita income in the country is higher than the regional average. In part, thanks to foreign investment, a developed infrastructure and external financial support.

The active population is around 90,000 people, with an estimated unemployment rate of 17% in 2002. The sectoral distribution of labor follows the proportions mentioned for GDP (primary 1%, secondary 13% and services 86%).

The exchange rate of the national modena (Antillean guilder) to the US dollar has been fixed at 1:1.79 since 1989.

Economically, the Antilles stand out due to foreign visits and offer their services
