Echinopogon is a genus of herbaceous plants belonging to the Poaceae family. It is native to Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. It comprises 13 described species and of these, only 7 accepted.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Ambroise Marie François Joseph Palisot de Beauvois and published in Essai d'une Nouvelle Agrostographie 42, 148, 161. 1812.

Etymology

Echinopogon generic name derived from the Greek equinos (hedgehog) and pogon (beard), referring to the inflorescence.

Cytology

Base number of the chromosome, x = 7. 2n = 42.
