eBay (English pronunciation: /ˈiːbeɪ/) is a site for the auction and electronic commerce of products through the Internet. It is one of the pioneers in this type of transaction, having been founded on September 3, 1995. From 2002 to 2015 eBay owned PayPal.

Since July 2015 eBay's chief executive officer (CEO) is Devin Wenig.

Description

  • Subasta: is the most common transaction on the site. The seller puts an output price and a determined duration for the ad and as long as that period of time lasts, the buyers will bid for it. The highest payer takes the item under the conditions of delivery and returns imposed by the seller.
  • Buy it now!: the seller establishes a fixed price and, if the plaintiff is willing to pay it, it will be his.
  • Classified advertisement: sale of items under this form of advertisement, in which the characteristics of the article in question and its price are displayed.

The seller can establish his own payment policy: PayPal, credit card, bank transfer or cash on delivery at the time of receipt of the order and this is stated in the ad, along with the description of the order and the photo, if applicable. In exchange for posting your ad, eBay charges the bidder a commission in the event of a sale, in proportion to the final sale price.

Although security and buyer protection have been increased lately, it should not be forgotten that any transaction on eBay is a deal in which the company does not intervene, so the success of the sale depends on the good faith of the other party. eBay is really an automatic intermediation system, in which users can qualify the other user through a system of positive or negative points, depending on the success of the operation. However, this system has often proven to be easily manipulated, which is why in the past there have been cases of scams involving Asian sellers and high-tech products (bargain-price LCD TVs, etc.).

History

eBay was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar in San Jose, California; the first item sold was a useless laser pointer, priced at $14.83. Shocked, Omidyar contacted the auction winner to find out if he really understood what he had bought. The answer was even more amazing: "I like to collect useless laser pointers."

  • In 1999 his stock exchange begins at the Nasdaq index.
  • In 2001 he acquired the French group iBazar for 100 million dollars, expanding his business to the European market.
  • In 2002 buy the company PayPal.
  • In May 2005 he purchased the Loquo classifieds portal.
  • In March 2009, the new classified ad service is launched in Spain: eBay advertisements (buy classified ads), eBay floors (release classified ads) and eBay cars (motor classified ads). These new services are a global novelty, using Spain as the first platform for the new local eBay Inc strategy.
  • In April 2009, he announced that he had obtained approval from the South Korean authorities for the purchase of 34.2% of the South Korean Gmarket auction page, with the promise of helping small and medium-sized businesses sell their products online. Ebay said he'll pay $1.2 billion for the purchase.
  • In April 2009, Ebay reported that he would do his Internet telephony operation, Skype, through a stock exchange, as Ebay wants to pay between $2 billion and $2 700 million. eBay bought Skype in 2005 for $2 600 million.
  • In 2010, eBay is considered the world's most forged website.
  • In 2013, eBay buys his rival Braintree for $800 million.
  • In July 2015 you completely separate from PayPal
  • In August 2020 he sold to the Norwegian company adevinta its commercial business classified by an amount of 9200 million dollars, this gives this company a presence in 20 countries with a market of 1000 million people and 3000 million visits per month

Criticism

One of the aspects that presents the greatest risks for those who purchase items on eBay in the auction modality, are the false offers or bids made by the seller on their own items with the purpose of increasing the price. final sale price, either through a different "user" within the eBay platform or with the help of someone who operates the platform in collusion with the seller.

In this sense, eBay has admitted that these attempts at fraudulent offers are common on the site, although they claim to have adequate technology to detect them. Despite this, police authorities warn that "it is very difficult" prove the existence of a fraudulent offer.

When a buyer suspects that an item is receiving false offers from the seller or its allies (an illogical increase in the amounts offered by the same buyer without competitors bidding on the same item), the buyer can report the situation to eBay, but eBay will always reserve -under the declared intention of protecting the confidentiality and reputation of sellers- the right not to inform buyers about the actions it will take if it is confirmed that the seller has made offers for their products. own articles. However, as the final sale prices of the items rise, both the seller and eBay directly benefit, so it seems counterintuitive for eBay to really be interested in finding out if sellers are being honest, as this would go a long way. against their own commercial interests.

Additionally, there is the fact that the work teams at eBay and similar auction sites have been vastly overwhelmed for some time now by the workload inherent in this type of e-commerce operation, and trying to review each of the cases reported by buyers would clearly be beyond the real possibilities of the available human resources infrastructure.

From the above it can be concluded –with a certain degree of certainty– that shill bidding is much more frequent than eBay might be willing to accept publicly and So far there is no clear and direct solution offered by eBay to assure buyers that false bids will be kept to a minimum with timely follow-up by the company to the cases reported by buyers.

Anonymous, together with other Internet groups, coordinated cyberattacks within the payback operation against Postfinance (Swiss bank), credit cards (Visa - Mastercard) and other web pages such as PayPal (owned by eBay) that canceled their services with WikiLeaks in the aftermath of Cablegate.
