East Azerbaijan Province
East Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani: Şərqi Azərbaycan, Persian: آذربایجان شرقی, Âzârbâiŷân-e Šarqi;) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. It is in the northwest of the country, bordering the Republic of Azerbaijan. Its capital is Tabriz.
Geography
East Azerbaijan province covers an area of 47,830 km². The province borders to the north with the republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The province reaches its highest elevation with the 3722 m high Mount Sahand, which is located south of Tabriz. The lower altitude area remains around Garmaduz (Ahar). The province has mountain ranges that are classified into three sectors: Qara Daq Mountains, Sahand and Bozqush Mountains, and Qaflan Kuh Mountains.
