Dupontia fisheri

Dupontia is a monotypic genus of herbaceous plants belonging to the Poaceae family. Its only species: Dupontia fisheri, is native to of the arctic.

Description

Perennial, rhizomatous or stoloniferous plants with culms 10-50 cm tall; herbaceous Leaves not auriculate. With the margins of the sheath united. Pods often purplish. Blades of linear leaves; narrow; 1-5 mm wide; flat or folded, without cross ribs. The ligule is a truncated or non-truncated membrane 1-3 mm long. Bisexual plants, with bisexual spikelets and hermaphroditic flowers. paniculate inflorescence. The fertile female spikelets 4-9 mm long; laterally compressed to not fully compressed; disarticulating above the glumes. The rachilla extends beyond the upper fertile female floret to the extent of the bare rachilla.

Taxonomy

Dupontia fisheri was described by Robert Brown and published in Chloris Melvilliana 33. 1823.

Etymology

Dupontia: Generic name given in honor of the French botanist J. D. Dupont.

fisheri: An epithet given in honor of Mr. Fisher, whose herbarium contained the most complete series of herb species.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 7, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 42, 44, 88 and 132, since there are diploid species and a polyploid series. Relatively "large" chromosomes.
