Duchy of Saxe-Marksuhl
The Duchy of Saxe-Marksuhl was a former duchy of Germany located in the current federal state of Thuringia, belonging to the so-called Ernestine Duchies, since they were ruled by dukes of the Ernestine line of the Saxon house of the Wettins.
Saxony-Marksuhl was part of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar until in 1662 the sons of William IV of Saxe-Weimar divided up their territories. For the little brothers, Juan Jorge and Bernardo, two small duchies were constituted: Duchy of Saxony-Marksuhl and Duchy of Saxony-Jena, respectively, which only covered the districts of both cities.
In November 1668, Adolf William of Saxe-Eisenach died, having seen his four children die at a very young age. However, his wife Elizabeth of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was expecting a fifth child, who was born 8 days after his father died, but did not reach two years of age either, in February 1671 the heir to Saxe-Eisenach died.. His uncle John George takes over the duchy and the Saxe-Marksuhl line becomes the ruling line in Saxe-Eisenach.
