Dr. Slump (Dr.スランプ, Dokutā Suranpu?) is a Japanese manga and anime by Akira Toriyama. When the manga appeared in the pages of Shueisha's Shōnen Jump magazine in December 1979, its author was unknown to the general public. However, the acceptance of the manga was so massive that on April 8, 1981, the first episode of the animated series was released; thus making a new record time between the appearance of the manga and the making of the anime.

The manga finished publication in 1984, with a total of 18 volumes. The television series exceeded 240 episodes, ending on February 19, 1986. In 1993 both the manga and the anime were picked up. This time the manga, now in color, was written by Takao Koyama and drawn by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru and published in Shueisha's V Jump magazine, ending in September 1996. There was also a second season, again written by Takao Koyama but drawn by Tadayoshi Yamamuro, first airing on November 27, 1996.

Characters

Among the best-known characters are:

Norimaki Family

  • Arale Norimaki, Norimaki Arare, top protagonist Dr. SlumpIt is an android created by Senbei Norimaki. It lacks common sense but has extreme strength and a very energetic and innocent personality. He also has extraordinary skills in mathematical calculations and no one in Villa Pengüino He knows it's a robot.
  • Senbei Norimaki, Norimaki Senbee (or only) Doctor.), scientific genius (he declares himself) and inventor. Creator of many ingenious artifacts to be able to assist in their daily tasks. He's 28 years old and he's single. While Arale, another of her creations, presents her as her sister, she could easily be regarded as her daughter.
  • Gatchan Norimaki (Gashan Norimaki In Hispanoamérica), a baby with wings, antennas, a surprising voracity for metal and other objects and superpowers beyond understanding, that Senbei Norimaki brought from the past with his 'maquinita of time'. The creature was inside an egg that later hatched at home. While it is not clear whether Gatchan is a boy or a girl, what if it is that when he is not playing around with Arale, he is with Bazara, Agira and other famous monsters of Japan's cinema, which here appear from the height of Arale or smaller. In fact, Gatchan is a cherub sent by God to Earth, which would explain his superpowers, perhaps metal eating is simply another of Mr. Akira Toriyama's jokes. In one of the chapters Senbei Norimaki speaks to Arale who was with Gatchan and tells them to help him make dinner, because they are women.
  • Midori YamabukiThe beautiful teacher of Arale and her friends, who teaches and loves all her students without distinction. His outstanding physical and long-haired blonde hairs are nothing compared to the pleasure of his company, although at times he is a strong woman most of the time dazzles all men, Senbei is not a separate case. Midori is the woman of her dreams and during the series it will do everything possible and impossible to conquer it or simply spend time with it. Later in the series this relationship ends in marriage and from which it turns out a child named Turbo who has superpowers and can also fly and even though he is basically an infant is a genius (appears in Dragon Ball with the rest of the cast), she is very affectionate with Arale who treats like a daughter.
  • Turbo NorimakiThe first son of Senbei Norimaki. Once he was born he was traveling with his father, Senbei stopped in a place to watch some women, Turbo got out of the car, crawled and when going a little far he died as he was run over by a spaceship. Aliens save turbo with their technology and leave it there. Senbei realizes that Turbo is not and seeks it, makes a scandal but in the end they find it. After that Turbo began to develop powers and amazing intelligence. He was given the ability to speak, in addition to intelligence, telekinesis, teleportation, fly among others.
  • Caramel Man #4 or Obokaman (Obotchaman) Robot who at first was the enemy of Arale Norimaki because his creator, Dr. Mashirito wants to conquer the world and Senbei, Gatchan and Arale (consciously or unconsciously) do not leave it. Then he made a robot boy with the same mechanism of Arale and at the end Mashrito was angry with him, because Caramel Man No. 4 fell in love with Arale. He fired him and became Obokaman of Name, to be a friend of Arale, Gatchan, Midori and Senbei. At 2 days of being friends Obokaman fell in love with Arale, but he didn't dare tell him. Once he told him, Arale ran out of theft and didn't hear it. After recovering, Obokaman has never felt able to say it but wants to tell him somehow. He has a rival, Pincho, who fell in love with Arale at first sight but surely Obokaman and Pincho will never dare tell him and Arale the only thing he wants are bigger breasts, missiles or fly like Gatchan. He marries Arale and has a baby built by Senbei.

Kimidori Family

  • Akane Kimidori (END) stakeholder oriented, Kimidori Akane) she is Arale's best friend, she has severe changes of attitude, is the classic bromist empedernida and rebellious, engineers disparate plans that combine perfectly with the erratic character of Arale, although she often ends up exceding with her mischiefs and concludes by perverting the good act of the robot girl and both pay the price. She has an older sister, Aoi Kimidori, who works in a coffee shop. He's appeared along with other Dr's characters. Slump in some Dragon Ball chapters.
  • Aoi Kimidori (і), Kimidori Aoi) She's Akane's older sister, she works in a cafeteria, she doesn't have too much apparition.
  • Kon Kimidori (source,, Kimidori Kon) He's Akane's father and Aoi.
  • Murasaki Kimidori (і), Kimidori Murasak) Mother of Akane and Aoi, she's always pissing her ass in a sexy way; she's really the younger sister of Taro and Peasuke's mother.

Soramame Family

  • Taro Soramame (!! and Peasuke Soramame!! are two brothers sons of a hairdresser from Villa Pingüino, Kurikinton, who appears constantly. Taro is something like Akane's boyfriend but as it is to be expected it is an irremediably bizarre relationship and more than anything a strange friendship; the young man appears to be the classic tough and cool guy with sunglasses and everything, but in reality it is only a pelle and a good subject victim of the behavior of the two naughty ones. Then Taro fell in love with Tsururin, who later became his wife. Peasuke is Taro's younger brother, always wears his raccoon hat and leaves something clear, for the only reason why he doesn't scare his shadow is because he was born with her.
  • Kurikinton Soramame!! He's Taro's father and Peasuke, he's the hairdresser in town. Another madness of Toriyama is that his face is a cartoon of the actor Clint Eastwood.
  • Mame Soramame (∫, Soramame Mame) She's Taro and Peasuke's mother, she uses a hat like Peasuke's.

Tsun Family

  • Tsururin Tsun (T, Tsun Tsururin): A Chinese girl with supernatural powers. Taro's in love with her, but if the boy touches her, she loses her powers. She measures almost the same as Arale.
  • Tsukutsun Tsun: Little brother of Tsururin (but much higher than her) and Akane's boyfriend. If a real girl touches her, she becomes a tiger, and only becomes human when she touches a real boy.
  • Tsuruten Tsun (Tに, Tsun Tsuruten): The father of Tsururin and Tsukutsun. It connects well with Senbei as they are similar characters (they are both perverts), and it is also inventor, although not as original as Senbei.
  • Tsuntsunodanoteiyugo Tsun (T alleged遊。 Tsun Tsuntsunodanoteiyūgō): The mother of Tsururin and Tsukutsun, has a car name, and does not support her husband's glows.

Recurring characters

  • Kinoko Sarada (de γ ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü ¢Ü , a naughty little girl with sunglasses that is extremely rebellious, loves her Masked Rider tricycle, detests the outdated and claims to be the most modern girl in all Villa Pingüino, even though she still has trouble of sphincters and other things her age. Things that disguises very well by changing the subject or insulting, whenever it is frightened by Arale pisses herself saying "I have shed so many drops of my youth."
  • Chibil Pipi (Chiquidiablo) He is a devilish friend of the protagonist, who always does evil and rides on his faithful dragon. It is dedicated to causing countless disasters for enjoyment, but it is always captivated by the goodness of Arale. Many people think that the distinctive seal of Toriyama to include parodies is also present here, in the form of this little devil, as the whole plot is very similar to that of the devil Mefisto and his daughter Heckett of the anime Ribbon no Kishi created by Ozamu Tezuka. On one occasion save Sembei and Arale from going to hell.
  • Donbe She's a naughty little bitch of Arale who has the ability to become all sorts of things, animals and people, and usually gets into trouble for that, she's sick of humanity.
  • Gorila Family: A family of gorilla friends of Arale and the others. They once confused Senbei with his father, who believed he died, but he was locked up in a place and Arale saved him. The gorilla mom has 38 young children and a big one.
  • Cacca: Caca that is a good friend of Arale. This always makes him "Txun, Txun" (for Hispanic America in the original series appears as a cameo).
  • Son Goku: He is the protagonist of Dragon Ball, it is not a fixed character in the series, but in the series Dragon Ball Son Goku arrives in Villa Pingüino persecuting General Blue of the army of Red Ribbon. His radar is broken, so he stays a few days in town for the Doctor to fix it. But Dr. Slump never saw so much technology and Turbo finally repairs the radar. The final confrontation between Goku and Blue takes place in front of the Senbei family. Blue, with his hypnotic powers, is about to end Goku's life, but Arale saves him that gives a blow to Blue that sends him to the desert. That's the only time Goku appears in the Penguin Villa.
  • King Nikochan (Rey risitas) (cf. Nikochan Kerai): The king of the planet Nikochan. He's an alien who has his ass in his head, his nose is the antennas, and his ears have them on his feet. He intends to conquer planet Earth but was sabotaged by Arale and Gatchan who had eaten his ship. They're always looking for a way to get money to buy a spaceship. After much suffering they return to their planet, but with a big problem. In the Latin American version (folded in Mexico) of the 2 series, he speaks with a Portuguese accent.
  • Servant of King Nikochan (sirviente del Rey risitas) (..... Nikochan Daiō): Servant of the king Risitas who follows him everywhere, wears glasses, is much smarter than the king and is orange.
  • Dr Mashirito (disappearing): The character is inspired by the manga editor. He's Senbei's enemy, he's always making Candy Men to destroy him.
  • Toriyama ()): The creator of the series, he appears frequently in history, usually represented by a bird, a robot, or a man wearing a surgical mask. Also, in vol. 8, he makes a career “The Great Prix of the Pingüino Village”. Arale had won but Toriyama says he won. He usually plays with the characters, sometimes he is threatened by the same to fulfill his dreams or to be drawn better. It makes constant events to hide secrets or to mock them.
  • Tremorines: He's a murderer who makes several attempts to kill Arale.

In the series, in one of the openings, a character appears with the physique of the Xenoform from the Alien movie saga, in the year the manga was published and the anime came out a year before the first movie in the Alien saga the Eighth Passenger (1979) 7 years after Aliens El Regreso (1986) was released

Superheroes

  • Ultraman It is a parody to the Japanese superhero, who is actually a strange and superpowered child, who goes to school with Arale and for one or another reason is always at the time when he dawns in Villa Pingüino, shortly before the sun kicks and that two crazy crows sing: -Torpe -Torpe; and leave the scene, then Ultraman cacarea.
  • Suppaman It's a parody to DC Comics Superman, who flies but prefers to move in a skateboard. Although many superheroes do not need any kind of transformation before acting, he does require it. He's a low man with lenses who wear a supertraje under his clothes like Clark Kent, but instead of having a briefcase full of reporter notes, he loads a leather backpack where he wears a jar of acid plums and dynamite cartridges. His characteristic phrase is "If I become Suppaman like acid plums."

Arale admires him since he is always willing to punish evil, fight for justice and blow up anyone who makes fun of him.

  • Like Supaman, Panzán and Secret agent They were built based on a parody system. One is the "insurable and powerful King of the Jungle", although it is not insurmountable, as Arale always overcomes it. And the other is the secret superagent that is actually a "super-recolector" and a health agent.

Penguin Village

Penguin Village (ペンギン村, Pengin Mura?) or Penguin Village is the fictional town where most of the Dr. Slump stories take place.

Set on a fictional island, called Gengoro (ゲンゴロウ島 , Gengorō Tō?), of mountainous terrain. It has been said that it is in Nagoya although originally the island is located in the Dragon World. It carries a mix of Japanese and tropical traits. It has a police station, a bank, a school (where you don't study, you only attend), a hospital, a zoo, a cafeteria, a barbershop (where the Soramame family works) and other commercial stores; in addition to houses.

Its fixed population is 50 inhabitants and as many occasional ones. Populated by humans and other humanoid beings (including the Moon and the Sun). You can also find animals with prehistoric characteristics.

You can use this village as a stage in the video game Dragon Ball: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 by collecting the seven spheres

Influence

In the anime as well as the manga, Toriyama was the one who gave Arale weird lines:

  • "N'cha" is used by the protagonist thanks to Senbei, that phrase means: Hello! and "Good afternoon", in Hispanic America "Let Onda!"
  • "Bye'cha" means: Bye! in Spanish is: "Adiosin!" in Spain "Chao chao!"
  • "Hoyoyo" (.λ?): It is what Arale does when he gets confused.
  • "Kiiin" (Speeding?): The noise in Japanese is that of the plane but in Hispanoamérica names: "EEEEEEEIIIhhhh!"
  • "Oha-konban-chiwa" (looting phrase.국?): "Ohayou" (Good morning) + "Konbanwa" (Good afternoon) + "Konnichiwa" (Good afternoon) is a phrase when Arale arrives anywhere. In Spain "Good night" (Good morning + good evening + good night).
