Dominique Perrault is a French architect born in Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne in 1953. In 1981 he created his own studio. His most outstanding work is the François Mitterrand Library in Paris.

Biography

A committed player in contemporary architecture, Dominique Perrault is a professor at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, a lecturer in France and abroad, and a member of the Scientific Council of the Atelier Internationale du Grand Paris since 2012. Architect of the National Library of France after winning the competition in 1989, he is the author, among other things, of the velodrome and the Olympic swimming pool in Berlin, the extension of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg, the Olympic Tennis Center in Madrid, the campus Ewha Women's University in Seoul and Fukoku Tower in Osaka. His work is exhibited in the main museums of the world. The Georges Pompidou Center in Paris gave him a monographic exhibition on all of his work in 2008. He was also appointed curator of the French pavilion for the architecture section of the Venice Biennale in 2010. In parallel, he is in charge of important heritage rehabilitation operations, such as the prestigious Longchamp racecourse in Paris, the Dufour pavilion in the Palace of Versailles or the Louvre Post Office in Paris. In the spring of 2014, Dominique Perrault inaugurated the tallest tower in Vienna, icon of the new business district of the Austrian capital, as well as the Grand Theater de Cordeliers in Albi (France).

Philosophy

The four main lines of research that have earned him the title of Doctor “Honoris Causa” by the University of Architecture and Urbanism of Bucharest in May 2013 are the following: «The first, linked to the desire to enrich the architectural vocabulary, lies in the eloquent interpretation of the sources of inspiration […] of artistic minimalism and conceptual art. In Perrault, the vocabulary of composition implies a simplification of syntax, not morphology. The second line points to the open and flexible approach, the fact of accepting uncertainties, rejecting dogmatism and criticizing questions of style and composition. The third considers architecture as an integral part of the landscape. The fourth is linked to innovation. [...] Inspired by the lesson of the modern movement, the curtain walls detached from the structure and revealed as light, transparent and translucent screens are manifested as a praise of contemporary technologies, without submitting to them. Innovation is closely linked to engineering." For Frédéric Migayrou, « all of Dominique Perrault's work questions the figural aspect of architecture, its ability to make sense, to build a dynamic image woven from social and cultural values. [...] Dominique Perrault's position is intertwined between this rationalism, which seeks to articulate the laws of composition of typological elements, and a structuralist understanding of architectural syntax, thus multiplying the games of interrelationships between scale and value components. very disparate symbolic" At the crossroads of disciplines, his work is for Luis Fernández-Galiano "often linked to the great tradition of French geometric monumentality; it is inevitable to relate his resounding gestures in the territory with that affirmative urbanism that treats nature as a voluntary geography; and it is necessary to interpret the almost innocent simplicity of his fundamental diagrams in the light of conceptual or minimal practices that extend to the limits of “land art” and “arte povera”.
