The City of Joy

His most important and well-known book, The City of Joy (1985), takes place in Calcutta and tells the story of the inhabitants of a miserable shantytown. There, the author spent two years researching and documenting the lives of his neighbors, living with those affected by social inequality, unemployment, disease and misery. The book sold millions of copies in more than thirty languages. Fulfilling a promise, the author donated half of the profits to the inhabitants of the shantytown.[citation needed] He then gave lectures and organized collections that were transferred to India himself supervised, as well as the fulfillment of the works.[citation needed] In addition to works aimed at improving the health of the inhabitants, he carried out irrigation works in the lands of the villages of peasants with few resources.[citation needed]

Based on his book, the film The City of Joy, directed by Roland Joffé, was filmed in 1992.
