Almost all Dominicans are descendants of African slaves bought by colonial plantation owners in the 18th century. Dominica is the only island in the Eastern Caribbean Sea that maintains some of its pre-Columbian population (the Carib aborigines), who number about 3,000 people living on the east coast of the island.

The rate of population growth is very slow, due, first of all, to emigration to more prosperous Caribbean islands, the United States, England and Canada. English is the official and universally understood language, however, due to historical French domination, Antillean Creole, a French dialect, is also widely spoken. About 80% of the population is Catholic. In recent years, a number of Protestant churches have been established.
