The "Digital World" (デジタルワールド, Dejiitaru Waarudo?), is a fictional alternate plane, created for the Digimon franchise. In the Digimon video games, anime and manga, it is a virtual space, created by computer data or computers, located in the communications networks of planet Earth, and is the habitat of creatures known as "Digimons". 3. 4; or Digital Monsters. In the franchise, it is known that humans can access this world through the network through the digitization of matter, with a webcam, a scanner or the scanner of a multifunction or the camera of a smartphone. Digimon can also cross over to the Real World (リアルワールド Riaru Wārudo, or 現実世界 Genjitsu Sekai) or Human World (人間界 Ningenkai) as they call Earth, synthesizing proteins and lipids to create their physical bodies.

Origins

The origin of the Digital World varies depending on the continuity in which it appears. However, there are several theories about the creation of this world.

In Digimon Tamers: Brave Tamer, a game for Wonderswan, Bandai's portable console, it is said that the Digimon World was created at the beginning of the 20th century by the Atanasoff Berry Computer (ABC) and ENIAC -the first computers-. ABC would form the foundation and ENIAC would build on it. As time passed, even after these computers were disconnected, Earth's chain of communications continued to grow... and all that amount of data was transformed into what is known as the Digital World. Many Digital Worlds were created, paralleling the "Alternate Earths" that exist in the Multiverse.

Another theory indicates that Yggdrasil, the Super Computer of unknown origin, was the one who created the Digital World. Although there are no sources to support this theory, in the franchise, Yggdrasil is known to have destroyed the "Old Man" Digital World because of the Digital Hazard (Digital Hazard) that occurred when the capacity of the memory container exceeded its limit and threatened to destroy the Digital World and the entire network itself, and built a New Digital World , with unlimited memory space, so you can continue your experiments.

A final theory indicates that the Digital World is a virtual space created by the researchers who discovered the Digimon, giving them a habitat so they can observe them up close, but not the world the Digimon inhabit. The theoretical world where Digimon inhabit has been given the name “Digimon World” (Digimon World (デジモンワールド, Dejimon Wārudo)) in order to make it more understandable.

In Digimon Xros Wars another theory is proposed. According to Wisemon, the Digital World is much older than the Human World, and may even predate the creation of Earth. Humans managed to make contact with a small part of the Digital World (quite possibly 5% of it), thus creating digital technology. However, in said season the origin of the Digital World itself or who could have created it is not explained.

About the Digital World

The Digital World presents characteristics parallel to those of the Earth such as geography, part of its basic natural laws (gravity, etc.) and a great variety of climates. However, natural laws can be altered at will through programs and the Digital World can undergo drastic changes in just seconds. For example, a giant mountain can be born out of nowhere, or a cruise ship can navigate in the middle of a desert. This malleability makes the Digital World frequently the target of attacks by Digimon or humans with bad intentions.

Instead of animals, the dominant life form in the Digital World are Digimon, also known as digital monsters, however, there are other lower digital life forms, such as Digi-Kamurus, fish-shaped beings that they inhabit the lakes, rivers and seas of the Digital World; or the Digi-Gnomes, beings capable of modifying and creating things by manipulating data; Bugs (or Bugs), who live in caves; the Digi-Elfs, a currently discovered race; the Digi-Tanks (or Digi-Beetles in the Digimon World), powerful combat vehicles with a will of their own; and the Digi-Humans (or Analog Humans in the Digimon World), beings created from data that have a human form, but are neither human nor Digimon (eg Gennai).

Generally, human beings are unaware of the existence of the Digital World, and the few humans who know about it are those who programmed some aspects of the Digital World, or those who were summoned to it by some Digimon or other digital being. However, on rare occasions, dimensional portals or wormholes connecting Earth and the Digital World open accidentally, abducting people unaware of the Digital World in the process, or letting Digimon into the Real World. Although in some of the seasons of the animation, the course of time runs parallel to that of the Real World, this does not apply to all known Digiworlds, in which time passes much faster than in the Human World (in some cases, while in the Digital World it can take years, in the Real World it only takes a few hours).

Digiworld Versions

The different Digimon continuities take place in different Digiworlds, each located in an alternate plane of reality. The basics are the same, but their individual nature and the origins and history of the Digital World in particular are very different.

Standard

The standard Digiworld is the one based on the Digimon V-Pets manuals and other information that is published on the official Digimon website. This Digital World is mainly composed of a huge body of water known as the Net Ocean, on which four land masses float: File Island, Folder Continent, WWW Continent, and Gods Island. In the center of the Digital World, hidden under the ocean lies a fifth land mass known as the Dark Area. This Digiworld is ruled by the God of Digimon.

Digimon Adventure/Adventure 02

This Digital World is similar to the "standard" Digital World, but with a few differences. Although File Island exists, Folder Continent is replaced by Server Continent (when the Digimon Emperor reigned, North Server and South Server were created, the former ruling as part of the United Kingdom of File, East, and North Server) and the WWW Continent is known under the name of the "Eastern Region". Parallel to this Digital World, there are two other dimensions: one, a kaleidoscopic world in both color and shape, that possesses the energy to make wishes come true, and another, a dark world called the Sea of Darkness, which is created by pure energy. Negative and is the place where evil Digimon come from. These three worlds are very parallel to Earth. This Digital World is ruled by the four Sacred Beasts: Qinglongmon, Zhuqiaomon, Xuanwumon, and Baihumon.

Digimon Tamers

This Digital World has seven layers, which reflect the seven layers of the OSI Communications Model. It is the place where the Digimon that were created by the Wild Bunch in the mid-1980s live, although some other life forms have evolved in this world. In the early ages of this Digital World, it was attacked by the D-Reaper, a program designed to destroy data that exceeded the limits of the Digital World (which at that time was as small as a medium capacity RAM memory). Some of the layers of this world have been partially repaired unconsciously by the will of the Digimon that inhabited them. However, there are two fully repaired layers: the first is a great desert that has light portals that are used to travel between the different layers (although you cannot know which layer you are sent to), and the second is the kingdom of the four Sacred Beasts, where the gate to the world created by the D-Reaper is located.

Digimon Frontier

The structure of this Digiworld is quite different from the others, since the entire base of what exists in this Digiworld is compressed in the "DigiCode", which is found in the Digicode of the Digimon, or in key locations in different regions. Each of the regions of this Digital World represents one of the ten elements that are linked to the ten Legendary Warriors. It is the first Digiworld to show the existence of three moons, a concept that would be used in later Digimon stories. This Digital World is ruled by the three Great Angels, Seraphimon, Ophanimon and Kerpymon.

Digimon Chronicle/X-Evolution

The Old Digital World (the original Digital World we know from the TV series) collapsed due to the Digital Hazard, as memory storage levels were exceeded beyond the limit. Yggdrasil destroyed it, executing Program X. However, Yggdrasil created a new Digiworld, as he needed a habitat to continue his experiments with the Digimon. This new Digital World was created on the outside of Yggdrasil, thus ensuring that he had unlimited storage capacity. Using the "Chronicle Layer System", the New Digiworld is divided into three layers or terminals, called Ulud, Versandi and Skuld, which represent the Past, Present and Future respectively, and where the Digimon have been organized according to their types (dinosaur, cyborg, beast, etc.).

Digimon Savers (Data Squad)

The Digital World in Savers features several features of the Digital Worlds of previous series. For example, instead of clouds, there are various objects in the sky that look like computer chips, like in Digimon Tamers, and three moons have been seen, like in Digimon Frontier. In addition, there are quite strange places like an ice castle in the middle of the forest, or a city located on the sides of a precipice, which is reminiscent of the oddities that were seen in the Adventure Digital World. This Digital World is ruled by Yggdrasil.

Digimon Xros Wars (Fusion)

The original form that the Digiworld of Xros Wars had before starting the series is unknown, since the Digital World was destroyed and fragmented into 108 parts or Zones, which were rebuilt by the Digimon surviving the cataclysm to be able to inhabit them. Each Zone has a special chip, known as a Code Crown, which serves as the core of that Zone, and whoever possesses it can manipulate and recreate the Zone at will. It is possible that the core of the previous Digital World was a gigantic Code Crown. By collecting all 108 Code Crowns, the Digital World can be rebuilt at will by the one who possesses the chips. In the Xros Wars anime (but not in the manga), the villain Bagramon manages to gather the 108 Code Crowns, rebuilding the Digital World in seven gigantic Earths or islands (known as the Seven Kingdoms or Countries), which revolve around the core of the world. Digimundo, a colossal and dark Code Crown that emits negative energy.

Digimon V-Tamer

In Digimon V-Tamer, the action takes place in the "standard" Digiworld, focusing on the Folder Continent, a vast continent divided into five regions, classified according to the five families of Digimon that represent the first five versions of the Digimon Pendulum (the second generation of Digimon's Virtual Pets). This Digital World is ruled by Lord Holy Angemon.

Digimon D-Cyber

In Digimon D-Cyber, the action seems to take place at Ulud Terminal in the New Digiworld. This is because the Digivice D-Cyber is a Chinese version, modified from the Japanese Pendulum X (the fifth generation of Digimon's Virtual Pets), and therefore the D-Cyber manhua (Chinese cartoon) is loosely based on it. Digimon Chronicle.

Digimon Next

In Digimon Next, the Digital World appears to be connected to the Real World through the MMORPG called Digimon Net. In addition, there is an alternate plane known as the System World, where you can manage the Digital World. This Digital World is ruled by Yggdrasil.

Digimon World

In each of the different versions of the Digimon World, you can see different versions of the Digimon World.

  • Digimon World:

The action centers on File Island, although it shows off new regions that weren't seen in the anime. File City, the largest city on the island, is run by Jijimon.

  • Digimon World 2:

In addition to File Island, there are two other regions in this Digital World: the vast Directory continent and the Kernel Zone, where the core of the Digital World is located. Humans created two human colonies to live in the Digital World, Digital City, and Device Dome, and peaceful Digimon inhabit places like Meditation Dome or File City. This world was created by the GAIA Super Computer, and the only point of connection to the first Digimon World is the fact that Jijimon is the leader of File City.

  • Digimon World 3, Door to New Adventure:

The Digiworld in this version was designed for an MMORPG called Digimon Online, created by the company MAGAMI, which can only be accessed from certain entertainment centers. This game is hosted on five servers, but only Asuka and Amaterasu servers are explored in the game.

  • Digimon World X/4

The Digital World is located on the Yamato server. However, there is another server, the Home server, where the headquarters of the D.S.G. (Digital Security Guard), an organization created by the Digimon, whose goal is to maintain peace and order in the Digiworld. As a connection point with Digimon World 3, the server Asuka is named during the game.

  • Digimon Story/Sunburts/Moonlight/Lost Evolution (Digimon World DS/Dawn/Dusk/Lost Evolution):

In Digiworld here is very different from conventional Digimon World, as each region is located on a different server. Humans and Digimon live together in various human colonies. This Digital World is also ruled by Yggdrasil.

Places of the Digital World

Although the Digital World changes in each version. On Digimon Channel, the official Digimon page, an official map of it appears, hinting that perhaps the Digiworld based on the V-Pets is the "original". In addition, in the descriptions of the Digimon, certain regions where they inhabit are named. The following is a compilation of places and their descriptions taken from the official page.

Net

A vast ocean that mostly covers the Digital World. Digimon life is said to have originated from this ocean.

Island File

A large island located in the south-western part of the Digital World. It is divided into several sectors, each with a different landscape. Since the concept of four seasons does not exist in the Digital World, many of these landscapes are programmed to represent each one. Of all the places in the Digital World, it is the one that has been described in more detail.

  • File Island Regions:
    • City File: also known as the People of the Home, is the main city of the Island and is located in the center of it. It has several buildings, useful for Digimon's life and training. • Taladro Tunnel: a chain of tunnels artificially created inside Mount Panorama. It's Drimogemon's home. The lower layers of the tunnel are connected to the lava chamber of the volcano.
    • Gear Plain: a long and warm plain with several trees, which occupies almost the entire western part of the island. To the north there is a large factory of mechanical objects and a mountain of scrap. In the anime, this region is rather desert, with telephone poles instead of trees, and from the sky you can see great brands of gears on the ground. The sand is full of metal particles.
    • Industrial People: a strange village, which in reality is a factory that arm and disarm mechanical objects constantly, in an infinite circle. It is inhabited by the Cybernetic Digimon.
