Taxonomy
The genus was described by Pierre Remi Willemet and published in Annalen der Botanick. ed. Usteri 18: 11. 1796. The type species is: Dichanthium nodosum Willemet.
- Etymology
The name of the genus derives from the Greek bliss (two) and anthos (flower), alluding to two types of spikelets (msculine or neutral, as opposed to hermaphrodite) found in different parts of an inflorescence.
- Cytology
The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 10, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 20, 40, 50 and 60, since there are diploid species and a polyploid series.
