The term diabetes can refer to any disease from a heterogeneous group of diseases that only have in common the excretion of excessive volumes of urine and uncontrolled thirst. It generally refers to its most common subtype, diabetes mellitus, which in turn is a group of various metabolic disorders characterized by the persistent presence of elevated glucose concentrations in the blood plasma (hyperglycemia).
