Detective Conan (名探偵コナン, Meitantei Konan?) is a timeless and occasionally anachronistic manga series written and illustrated by Gōshō Aoyama. The story centers on "Shinichi Kudo". In order not to be discovered, Shinichi mixes the names of "Ranpo Edogawa" and "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" and adopts the persona of "Conan Edogawa". In that alter ego he will uncover increasingly difficult cases, leaving behind his adult counterparts at the level of bitumen. The manga began to be published in 1994 by the Shogakukan publishing house in the Japanese weekly magazine Shūkan Shōnen Sunday, and is made up to date of 102 volumes published in tankōbon format in Japan. Now, calling himself Conan Edogawa and hiding his true identity in order to protect himself and his family from the Men in Black, the young detective moves to the house of Ran and her father: detective Kogoro Mouri, who does not it is very prestigious. None of them know that Conan is actually Shinichi and he will use his secret to solve Mouri's own cases in his name and without anyone knowing. Not even Kogoro himself.

The only ones who know his true identity are, among others, Professor Hiroshi Agasa, who will provide him with all kinds of inventions and advice for his research; Heiji Hattori, a teenage detective like Shinichi, but unlike Shinichi, Hattori lives in the Kansai area of Osaka; Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, parents of Shinichi Kudo; Shiho Miyano / Ai Haibara / Sherry, the inventor of the APTX 4869 poison in the Men in Black organization, who ingests it in order to commit suicide, but to her surprise rejuvenates; and Vermouth, a member of the Organization.

Main characters

The following are the main characters.

  • Shinichi Kudo (.., Kudō Shinichi?): is the protagonist of the story, a 17-year-old reverted to a 6/7-year-old after taking a drug called APTX 4869: Conan Edogawa. He chose this name by the authors Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Rampo Edogawa. Her parents are writer Yusaku Kudo and actress Yukiko Kudo. He's in love with Ran, now he lives in his house with her father, the failed detective Kogoro Mouri. With her new identity she attends a primary school - where she connects friendship with Ayumi, Genta and Mitsushiko, after a while a new girl comes to school with the name of Haibara Ai who was part of the organization of black men (name Sherry key) but an event that bothered him caused him to get to take the same drug as Shinichi who made her shrink, now she lives with Professor Agasa and she is also part of the youth league of detectives who solve cases with the help of Conan. - and so Shinichi lives his day by day trying to figure out how to recover his old body. But while, the cases begin to call Kogoro's house, Conan looks for more clues that will lead him to be a step ahead of the "black men" and thanks to the inventions of Professor Agasa can easily solve the cases by making no one suspect, one of the inventions is the bird changes voices and the clock with anesthetizing darts that are the ones most used in the series.
  • Ran Mōri (, Mōri Ran?): she is a 17-year-old protagonist of history with Shinichi. She's a childhood friend of this and she's secretly in love with him. He usually accompanies his father, Kogorō Mōri, and Conan in the different cases. On several occasions he has suspected that Conan is, in fact, Shinichi although he always ends up convinced that he is only a child. She's a karate captain in her high school and a regional champion. It shows to be a person who cares deeply for those he loves, besides being patient and kind. When he perceives that the danger lurks someone from his environment, he acts impulsively, trying to prevent that danger from damaging this person in question. Example of the above is when it saves Ai Haibara from the shots of Calvados, a former member of the Organization of Black Men. Despite being a smart and overly brave young woman, she deeply fears everything related to the paranormal. He is able to recognize if Shinichi is near him, except when he finds himself as Conan, because of the custom of his company, although sometimes this similarity of essences makes him doubt the true identity of the child. By the previous ability, Ran can recognize the times that Kaito Kid has disguised himself as Shinichi, thus avoiding being deceived by this magician.
  • Kogorō Mōri (أعربية, Mōri Kogorō?): he is a private detective, Ran's father and ex-husband of the famous lawyer Eri Kisaki. He is addicted to tobacco, alcohol, horse racing and Yoko Okino concerts. When Conan moves to his house, his fame begins to grow as a detective, winning the nickname The Sleeping Detective. Although he seems to have no intellect for his work as a detective, in his past he was an excellent police officer. He has sometimes proved to be a highly intelligent person, especially in resolutions of cases that directly concern him.
Haibara Ai?): scientist from the Organization of Black Men and creator of APTX 4869, his real name is Shiho Miyano and he is 18 years old. The organization was known as Sherry. After Gin killed his sister Akemi Miyano, he decided to take the APTX 4869 thinking that he would kill himself, since the organization had locked her up because he didn't want to work anymore, however, he was shrinking just like Shinichi Kudo. In some parts of the series you can see that Ai Haibara is attracted by Shinichi Kudo. He lives with Professor Agasa and develops a quite peculiar relationship of father and daughter. Like Conan, Haibara has very good intuition, and is often able to "present" when someone observes it, mainly when he is someone from the Black Men's Organization.
  • Heiji Hattori (日本語, Hattori Heiji?): is a 17-year-old detective from Osaka. In his town he has the same fame as Shinichi in Tokyo, winning the nickname "the great detective of the West." After a couple of meetings with Conan, he discovers his true identity. Eventually he becomes a great friend of his. It belongs to Conan's group of allies. Her best friend is Kazuha Tomaya, whom she knows from a child and who she is in love with. When Kazuha is in danger or when a man approaches him considerably, Hattori quickly loses his temper, making him act impulsively. He has sometimes hinted to Kazuha that he has feelings for her, but immediately repents of it, so he tells her a number of things that manage to confuse her and convince her that she has misunderstood her words. Hattori has high intellectual abilities, of ingenuity, besides being a great kendo practitioner. He has helped Conan in various situations, in order to maintain his true identity as a secret of both Ran, Kazuha and Black men.
  • Kaito Kuroba (, Kuroba Kaito?): is the true identity of the famous magician jewel thief, Kaito Kid. He's a 17-year-old high school teenager at Ekoda. It is considered a great magician with multiple intellectual and physical talents, as well as having great physical attractiveness and great ability to conquer women. He's in love with his childhood friend Aoko Nakamori. His father, Toichi Kuroba, the first Kaito Kid, was killed by a secret organization. Because of the above, 8 years after this event, as a way to avenge the death of his father, Kuroba decided to continue the legacy of Kaito Kid. It established as a mission to find and destroy a precious stone that that organization had been looking for for for years. It is said that that stone is capable of giving eternal life. In order to identify it, Kuroba must put it, during the nights of the moon, at the same time. This explains the peculiarities of his actions as a thief, such as the one who only steals precious stones and the one who attacks only during the full moon nights. It is appreciated that Jirokichi Suzuki, uncle of Sonoko Suzuki, is constantly facing, as he is often making famous events in which he exhibits exclusive precious stones. Kuroba declared Conan his great rival.

The situation is complicated, the building is collapsing and, inside, only the juvenile detective from the west, Heiji Hattori and his childhood friend, Kazuha Toyama, remain. At that moment, Conan saves both of them from certain death. Everything seems to indicate that it is a terrorist act, but it is unknown who is the culprit and what was his main objective. Conan and Heiji fail to understand the situation, and in the midst of this confusion, Conan and the others come across a girl who claims to be "Heiji's fiancée". Her name, Momiji Ooka. This mysterious girl, in addition to being the junior champion of Hyakunin Isshu, also claims to be 'Heiji's destiny'. At that moment, in a Japanese house in Arashiyama in Kyoto, the champion of the Satsuki Cup is assassinated. Crime scene footage shows Momiji at the scene... and in the background, a mysterious "song" keep dreaming...

Video Games

Detective Conan, due to its success, has had a large number of video games, mainly on portable consoles, but also on some desktops such as Psx;"detective conan" (1998) or PlayStation 2; "Detective Conan: Legacy of Great Empire" (2004).

In March 2009, the Detective Conan video game, called "The Mirapolis Investigation," was released for the Nintendo Wii console mainly in Japan, America and Europe.

For the Nintendo DS platform, there are three games in the series.

Soundtrack

The series in the Hispanic world

Hispanic America

Detective Conan was released in Mexico in 1998, but only a few episodes ran, in which it was widely accepted by viewers, however this did not serve to keep it on the air.

It is exactly the same case in Colombia, where only a few episodes of the first block were broadcast.

In Argentina they broadcast the first batch, consisting of 65 episodes, on the extinct channel Magic Kids.

In Peru, the first season was broadcast on the Latina Televisión channel, in the children's program Chiquitoons during the year 1998.

In Chile, luck was better, since they broadcast the first block of 65 episodes at first on open TV through La Red —during 1998—, and then on Chilevisión in 1999. In the first instance, the first block of episodes was broadcast reaching number 65. After just over 1 year on the air, the series was withdrawn. But in 2006 it was broadcast again on the same channel, this time premiering the figure of 123 episodes (that is, all those dubbed for Latin America). The series has aired on Etc...TV the same batch of 123 dubbed episodes in the past, where it has been announced that new exclusive episodes will arrive. It was also released on the LivTV channel in 2008-2009.

In 2010, the City Family cable signal exclusively premiered movies 1 and 2 for all of Latin America with a new dubbing made in Mexico and respecting the original names of the characters. That dubbing did not prosper due to its poor quality, which led to a lukewarm reception by the public.

Unexpectedly, during 2013 the third film of the series was dubbed in Chile, by the hand of AEDEA Studio; for its distribution on DVD by AVH for Argentina in 2013 and by Edisur for Chile in 2014. As of November 10, 2014, a new season of the series was released by Etc...TV, which is unprecedented for Latin America, with a new dubbing made in Chile by AEDEA Studio, respecting the original names and dubbing the advances., epilogues and the "Next Conan Hint" ("Next track for Conan" as translated in this Latin dubbing) which began with episode 124 of the Japanese listing.

Since then, the series was broadcast on the Etc...TV channel in Chile, premiering new batches of episodes throughout 2015, 2016 and 2017. But after the series stopped broadcasting on Etc....TV since March 2018, there was no news until in September 2019 the series returned to the channel from episode 284 (Japanese numbering), but with the episodes in Japanese subtitled, it is unknown if the dubbing will continue.

Spain

The Manga

In 1998, Planeta de Agostini Cómics began publishing the series. Until the year 2000, 13 volumes had been published, but given the little follow-up to the series, the Catalan publisher stopped the collection.

In 2004, and due to the relaunch of the series in Spanish, the fans asked for the return of the collection and the publisher decided to continue it. This is how new fortnightly volumes began to be released, which enjoyed incredible success. This collection would be renamed “Volume 2” to differentiate it from its predecessor, which was reprinted again under the name “Volume 1” and with the same format.

The 13 volumes of Volume 1 correspond to the first 13 of the Japanese edition. The differences with respect to the original version correspond to the fact that the reading is done from left to right, the Keyhole (part of the volume where the characters are described) was eliminated and the covers of the volumes modified.

In 2005, Volume 2 had 32 volumes, which correspond to 14-29 of the original Japanese edition (these volumes had half of the pages of the Japanese volumes, approximately 96 pages per volume), presenting the same characteristics as the Volume 1 edition and were published biweekly.

From volume 33 of Volume 2 the volumes began to be published with the same number of pages as the Japanese one. As of July 2022, 102 volumes of Volume 2 have been published, corresponding to the first 99 volumes of the Japanese edition.

In 2007, the series “'Detective Conan Special” began to be published, a series written and drawn by Gosho Aoyama's assistants. 31 volumes of the 38 that exist in Japan have been published in Spain. Although it has currently been cancelled.

In 2011, a new edition began to be published from the beginning, “'Detective Conan: New Edition'” in which each volume is equivalent to two Japanese volumes. To date, 38 volumes have already come out (corresponding to the first 76 Japanese).

In addition, the publisher published two books about the series: one in 2007 “Detective Conan vs. Magic Kaito” where the best confrontations between these two series by Gosho Aoyama are collected, and another one in 2009 called “Learn English and Japanese with Detective Conan” which, as indicated in the title, is a course to learn these two languages and included a CD to practice pronunciation.

Anime

In Spain the series is distributed by Arait Multimedia throughout the country. The edition that the Madrid distributor acquired is the one of the international TMS masters that is televised in the rest of the European countries. The main differences between this “international edition” and the original Japanese are:

  • The headers do not have credits, unlike in the Japanese version.
  • The endings no longer present the Japanese credits, but have been translated into English.
  • The established numbering does not match the Japanese original, since in Spanish the specials of 1 or 2 hours are divided into 2 or 4 parts respectively.
  • Opening 2 and endings 2, 16 and 17 were eliminated for no reason.
  • The parts of the episodes that were originally issued before the opening and after the ending have been introduced into this version after and before the same respectively.
  • The “Next Conan Hint” (a fragment in which a hint was given to solve the case of the next episode) and “Conan Gag” (a joke that Conan and his friends told about the episode) have been eliminated for this version.
  • In the movies the Japanese texts have been presented in Spanish, including credits. In addition some scenes of the presentation of the series' argument have been cut.

From episode 306 the series began to be broadcast with great clarity and better image quality in Spain, although it was not until episode 509 when the series began to be broadcast in High Definition (HD) Wide Format (16:9).

The audio for the Spanish series has been recorded in stereo, which has greatly increased the sound quality of the episodes.

Broadcast

The series was broadcast for the first time on Cartoon Network on March 5, 2001 and later, premiered on June 29, 2002 on Antena 3 open-air, with the first 80 episodes being broadcast (although TMS Entertainment marketed the top 200). Mainly because the series showed murder, blood and violence, it was withdrawn from the Antena 3 schedule without being fully broadcast, which coincided with the temporary withdrawal of the manga in Spain. In addition, Channel 33 began to broadcast the series in Catalan, dubbing and broadcasting a total of 80 episodes in 2001, which would continue in 2003 until reaching the figure of 200 dubbed episodes. These episodes did not differ from those broadcast in Japan except for the censorship of some songs (opening and ending 2) and because the Japanese lyrics of these songs were suppressed. The dubbing was done in Barcelona.

It began to enjoy great success in other countries, such as France, Italy, Germany or the United States. This strengthened the negotiations of Arait Multimedia to buy the series due to the demand of the fans from TMS Entertainment and thus it began to be re-broadcast in 2005 on Channel 33 (from then on it began to broadcast on its sister channel K3 with the premiere of new episodes). These new episodes would be dubbed in Madrid and would be shown slightly altered (the Next Conan Hints were suppressed and the episode previews were moved to before the ending aired). Canal Sur broadcast it in Spanish advancing, in parallel, to the rhythm of channel K3. In the public sphere, the broadcast on Aragón Televisión, Castilla-La Mancha Televisión, and Canal Extremadura also stands out. In the private sphere, Cartoon Network also broadcast it and after it stopped broadcasting it began to be programmed by AXN.

In this way, the series would reach up to 300 episodes in Spain. The Galician regional TVG bought those 300 episodes that it would broadcast during the years 2006-2008 in its Xabarín Club youth block in the Galician language. By then, K3 and Canal Sur would have already reached 352 chapters.

In 2007, the distributor acquired new episodes, but given the high price they demanded for them, Canal Sur was unable to acquire them, something that the Catalan channel K3 was able to do. In this way, at the end of 2007, the first 456 episodes of the series had already been dubbed into the Catalan language, while other regional governments were still beginning to broadcast it.

In 2009, and due to the launch of the video game of the series in Spain, all the regional broadcasters that had previously broadcast the series returned to include it in their programming, although unfortunately they would only broadcast reruns (except K3, which premiered a new batch of episodes; 457-508). In addition, other channels were also interested in Detective Conan, including EITB (which dubbed into Basque), Canal Nou 2 (with a dubbing into Valencian that made 456 episodes) and IB3 (which dubbed 50 episodes into Catalan-Balearic). Animax, a private channel, also broadcast the series after AXN stopped doing it.

At the end of 2009, the Catalan regional television changed its name (from the old K3 to the new channel Super3) and broadcast episodes 509-561. In addition, it included the broadcast of the first eight films, something that had never been broadcast before on any channel in Spain, except on ETB3, where films five and six had already been broadcast in Basque. TVG has also dubbed the first 8 films in the series into Galician.

In 2010, Cartoon Network brought back the series and additionally released movies one, two, and four.

The Spanish dubbing dates are also quite chaotic. In the first place, a dubbing was made for Manga Films (DVD and VHS) of 9 episodes in the year 2000 to dub the first 80 in 2001. From the year 2004 episodes 81-407 were dubbed until the year 2007. It was in the year 2009 when movies 1-2 and 4 were dubbed.

The series ceased airing on Cartoon Network on September 9, 2011.

Years later, in 2015, the distributor Selecta Vision licensed the film Lupine III vs. Detective Conan, both on DVD and on Blu-Ray, although it has only been dubbed into Spanish, but without respecting the cast of voice actors of this dubbing.

In July 2016, after a reacquisition of the license by Arait Multimedia, the Catalan channel Super3 returned to broadcast the series and, after seven years without news, in September 2017, the Catalan television premiered a new batch of episodes (561-641), as well as movies 9 to 12. Three months after the end of the broadcast of this batch of episodes, in April 2018, the Super3 channel premiered more episodes (642-720).

The new Valencian regional television, À Punt, has also reacquired the broadcasting rights of its predecessor, Channel 9, and since its launch has broadcast four weekly episodes in Valencian, within the La Colla children's program, both through its website and on television.

In August 2018, the film distributor Alfa Pictures announced via Twitter the premiere of the twenty-second Detective Conan film, and the highest grossing to date, Detective Conan: The Zero Case, in theaters in Spain on September 9. November of the same year, both in Spanish and Catalan. In October they released the film's trailer in both languages. The film grossed €66,000 the first weekend of broadcast, with more than 10,000 viewers, being the most watched film in Catalan. On December 20, 2018, Alfa Pictures announced via Twitter the release of the film in physical DVD format on March 6, 2019, date postponed to April 4, when it was announced which will also be released on Blu-ray format.

In November 2018, during the Salón del Manga, the dubbing actress who plays Ran in the Catalan version confirmed the acquisition by Televisión de Catalunya of 150 new episodes of the series (721-870), which they began their broadcast in January 2019.

Thanks to the success of El Caso Zero, in February 2019 Alfa Pictures announced on its official Twitter account the release in Spanish theaters of the twenty-third film, The Fist of Blue Sapphire, on November 8, 2019. Months later, in July, Alfa Pictures announced the acquisition, both for television broadcast and physical distribution, of the rights to the last nine films in the series not yet released in Spain -13 to 21-, as well such as films 5 and 6, already released previously, and the television specials The two worst days in history and The first episode, all of them with Catalan dubbing, as well as subtitles in both Spanish and Catalan.

The first 43 episodes have been available on Crunchyroll since September 2020, subtitled in Spanish and American Spanish.

Since December 8, 2020, the series has been broadcast again on the regional channel TVG2 with episodes already seen. However, TVG itself on its Twitter profile and some members of the project such as the Galician voice actor for the character Heiji Hattori confirmed that new episodes would be broadcast, and that they were already working on their dubbing. In his return, he has taken the time slot in which Dragon Ball Z Kai was broadcast.

Since July 2022, the series presents its own channel on Pluto TV in which all the episodes dubbed into Spanish to date (401 episodes) are broadcast, surpassing the 52 episodes that PrimeVideo has.

  • In the Hispanic-American fold, the characters of Kogoro Mouri and Inspector Megure have been shared by two bent actors, who have doubled them in different episodes without any continuity.
  • In the Spanish bent, there was a change of cast from episode 77, so most characters have two actors of bent. In the case of Mitsuhiko's character, he has three voices, since after assuming the character in the 77th episode, Blanca Rada had to leave him in 336, to be replaced from chapter 346 by his partner Gema Carballedo.
  • From episode 124 in the Spanish-American version, they keep their original Japanese names due to the new bent study.

Reception

Both the anime and manga have achieved excellent success outside and within Japan, and have also received positive responses from critics for their plot and storylines. Detective Conan is the second best-selling manga in history, with more than 200 million copies, frequently appearing on manga best-seller lists. In 2001, the manga was awarded the Shōgakukan Prize in the shōnen category.

The animated adaptation of the series is also very popular in Japan, appearing in the top six in the Japanese TV Rankings on several occasions. The television series has ranked in the top twenty in polls conducted by the magazine anime Animage 1996 to 2001. In the ranking published by TV Asahi of the best 100 anime of 2006 (based on an online survey in Japan) it reached number 23. On the list of celebrities it reached number 43. Various of the films in the franchise were nominated for awards in their home country. The ninth film was nominated for the feature film category at the fifth annual Tokyo Anime Awards, and the next five films were nominated for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in their respective years of publication.

In the United States, Detective Conan received praise from Mania.com's Eduardo M. Chávez 's Chávez believes the manga is appealing to readers of all ages. and IGN's AE Sparrow praised it for its stories, mysteries, and the way Conan and his friends' investigations unfold. Sparrow calls the style of the series a cross between Scooby-Doo and Sherlock Holmes. Mania.com's Lori Lancaster described Detective Conan as "a smart series where there are mysteries around every corner," noting the "weird" and "interesting".

There is a museum dedicated to the series located in Hokuei, Aoyama's hometown of Tottori). In the town there are also several bronze statues of Shinichi Kudo, Conan Edogawa, and Ran Mouri that were installed in different places in the town.
