Deșteaptă-te, române! (Wake up, Romanian!) is the title of the national anthem of Romania. Its verses are composed by Andrei Mureșanu (1816–1863) and its music by Anton Pann (1796–1854).

History

It was written and published in the Romanian principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia during the Revolutions of 1848, when it was given the name "Un răsunet" (An echo). It was immediately accepted by the Romanian nationalist rebels, and was sung for the first time on July 29 of the same year in the town of Râmnicu Vâlcea, where it was transformed into a hymn with the title "Deșteaptă-te, Române " (Wake up, Romanian).

This anthem immediately gained the sympathy of Romanian nationalists for its hopeful message of freedom and patriotism, although it was not adopted as the national anthem of the Kingdom of Romania in 1866 due to its lack of praise for a monarch or a dynasty (as was usual in European hymns of the time). However, Deșteaptă-te, române retained its popularity as a patriotic song and as such was present in all the wars in Romania.

With the fall of the fascist dictatorship in 1944, and the proclamation of the People's Republic in 1947, the new authorities prohibited the use of Deșteaptă-te, române, which was revoked in 1977, although it continued without enjoying government approval. In 1989, during the anti-communist revolution against the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, the Deșteaptă-te, române was also present among the protesters calling for his overthrow on the streets of Bucharest. In this case, the renewed public use of the old patriotic song, sung by hundreds of demonstrators simultaneously, was an evident sign of rebellion against the Ceaușescu government. Thus, Deșteaptă-te, române became the country's informal national anthem in December 1989 under pressure from the masses of protesters, gaining official recognition as the Romanian anthem in 1990.
