Der er et yndigt land (Danish: There is a beautiful land) is the civilian national anthem of Denmark. If the royal family is present, the royal anthem Kong Kristian is used.
The lyrics were written in 1819 by Adam Oehlenschläger and carried the motto Ille terrarum mihi praeter omnes angulus ridet from the Latin poet Horace, meaning 'This land smiles on me the most among all places'. The music was composed in 1835 by H.E. Krøyer, and later modified by Th. Laub and Carl Nielsen.
Of its original 12 verses, currently only the first full verse is sung or performed, followed by the last four verses of the last one.
Der er et Yndigt Land | There's a beautiful country. |
---|
- Der er et yndigt land,
- det står med brede bøge
- østerstrand (bis.)
- Det bugter sig i bakke, dal,
- det hedder gamle Danmark
- og det er Brakes salt (bis.)
- Der sad i fordums tid
- of harniskklædte kæmper,
- udhvilede fra strid (bis.)
- Så drog de frem til fjenders mén,
- nu hvile deres bene
- bag højens bautasten (bis.)
- Det land endnu er skønt,
- ti blå sig søen bælter,
- og løvet står så grønt (bis.)
- Og ædle kvinder, skønne mø'r
- og mænd og raske svende
- bebo de danskes øer (bis.)
- Hil drot og fædreland!
- Hil hver in danneborger,
- som virker, hvad han kan! (bis.)
- Vort gamle Danmark skal bestå,
- så længe bøgen spejler
- without top i bølgen blå (bis.)
| - There's a beautiful country,
- its beautiful beech forests
- grow to the shore of the Baltic. (bis.)
- It extends through valleys and hills
- His name is old Denmark
- and here still dwells Freya (bis.)
- They spent their lives here.
- those brave armor giants
- resting from the fight. (bis.)
- From there they committed to enemy regiments,
- Your bones now rest
- under the tumults on the hills (bis.)
- This land is still adorable,
- because blue are the Belt and the ocean,
- and green forests and hills. (bis.)
- And noble women, beautiful maidens,
- courageous and intrepid men
- inhabit the Danish islands (bis.)
- Give honor to your king and your homeland!
- pays honor to any Danish citizen,
- that contributes to what you can! (bis.)
- Our old Denmark must persist
- while reflecting
- on the ridge of the wave (bis.)
