Departments of Haiti

Among the administrative divisions of Haiti, the department (French: département d'Haïti, [depaʁtəmɑ̃ d‿aiti]; Haitian Creole: depatman Ayiti) is the first of the four levels of government; Haiti is administratively divided into ten departments, which are subdivided into 42 districts, 145 communes, and 571 communal sections.

In 2003, the Nippes Department was created with the eastern part of Grand'Anse.

In 2014, there was a proposal from the Chamber of Deputies to increase the number of departments from 10 to 14, maybe up to 16.

These ten departments belonged to the three original provinces of colonial Saint-Domingue, which were North, South and West. Under Toussaint Louverture, the provinces became departments. In addition, the departments are divided into the following districts (French: arrondissements).
