Dendrocalamus
Dendrocalamus is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Poaceae family.
Description
It is a tropical genus that is similar to the genus Bambusa. With about 51 accepted species, this genus is found from the Indian subcontinent throughout Southeast Asia. Dendrocalamus giganteus is one of the tallest bamboos, capable of reaching heights of up to 30 m.
Taxonomy
The genus was described by Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck and published in Linnaea 9(4): 476. 1835. The type species is: Dendrocalamus strictus

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 12, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 48, 64, and 72 (rarely 70), as there are diploid species and a polyploid series.
- Etymology
Dendrocalamus: generic name derived from the Greek words: dendron = (tree) and kalamos (cane): like an arborescent cane.
