The decathlon (from the Greek δέκα 'ten' and ἄθλον 'test') is a combined athletics test that includes ten tests (four runs, three throws and three jumps), is held in two consecutive days, following an established order.
The men's decathlon has been part of the track and field program at the Olympic Games since Stockholm 1912. The equivalent women's event is the heptathlon, which has a few different events.
Sports disciplines
On the first day, the following tests are held and in this order:
- 100 meters smooth
- Length balance
- Weight launch
- Height balance
- 400 meters smooth
On the second day:
- 110 meters fence
- Disk launch
- Powdered jump
- Jabalin launch
- 1500 meters smooth
In the women's decathlon, a non-Olympic event, it is usual for the competitions (jumps and throws) to exchange the day of celebration in order not to interfere with the men's decathlon, since it is usual for both competitions to be held at the same time. time.
The marks obtained in the different tests are valued according to some score tables of the International Athletics Federation. The athlete with the highest score will be declared the winner of the competition.
Where possible there will be an interval of half an hour between the end of one event and the start of the next, for any individual athlete; and if possible, ten hours will elapse between the last test of the first day and the first of the second.
The series and groups will be drawn up by the technical delegate, and failing that by the referee, so that: athletes with similar records (in the same time, year, season...) in each event will compete together; there are five or more athletes in each heat or group and never less than three. When this cannot be done due to the schedule, the series or groups of the next test will be made according to the availability of the athletes after participating in the previous test. In the last test, the series will be ordered in such a way that the athletes who lead the classification compete in one of them. The technical delegate, and if applicable, the referee have the power to modify any group if they deem it necessary.
In each test the usual rules will be applied, with the following exceptions:
- In length jumping and launches only three attempts can be made.
- In the races all athletes will be warned in the event of a zero exit. The next null shall entail the expulsion of the offender.
Any athlete who does not try to take a start or make an attempt in contests will not be allowed to continue, they are considered to have abandoned the competition and will not appear in the final ranking. Any athlete wishing to withdraw must notify the referee.
The scores, with the tables in force, will be announced after each test, separately, and with the accumulated total. In the event of a tie, the athlete who has obtained the highest number of points in the greatest number of tests will win, and if this is not enough, the one who has obtained the highest score in any test (or in a second, etc.).
Only one timing system can be applied for the entire competition, but in the case of a record, the scores taken with the finish photo can be applied even if there are athletes who cannot use them.
Point system
The IAAF 2001 points table uses the following formula:
- Points = INT(A*(B-P)C) for track events
- Points = INT(A*(P-B)C) for field events
A, B and C are parameters that vary with the discipline, as shown in the table, while P is the best obtained by the athlete, measured in seconds (track events), meters (throws), or centimeters (jumps).

The decathlon table should not be confused with the points tables made by Bojidar Spiriev, which allow one to compare the relative quality of athletes' records in different events. In those tables, for example, a decathlon score of 9,006 points equals 1,265 "comparison points," the same points as an 18.00m triple jump.

Evolution of the world record
Masculine
The official decathlon score tables have been updated several times throughout history; the last one, in 1985. All official records since 1922 are offered with the score at the time of the record and its equivalent in the current system.
Roman Šebrle first athlete to exceed 9000 points.
Kevin Mayer currently has the global decathlon brand since 2018.

Athletes with the best world records
