Daredevil
Daredevil (also called Dan Defensor, Diablo Defensor or Diabólico in many Spanish translations), alter ego of Matthew Michael "Matt" Murdockis a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Daredevil was created by writer and editor Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett, with an unspecified amount of input from Jack Kirby. The character first appeared in Daredevil #1 (April 1964) in the Silver Age of Comics. Writer and artist Frank Miller's influence on the title in the early 1980s. Daredevil is commonly known by nicknames such as "The Man Without Fear" and the "Devil of Hell's Kitchen".
Daredevil's origins come from an accident he had in his childhood which gave him special abilities. While growing up in the historically rough and crime-ridden working-class Irish-American neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in New York City, Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from a truck after Save a man from being hit by a car. While he can no longer see, the radioactive exposure increases his remaining senses beyond normal human ability and gives him a 'radar sense'. His father, a boxer named Jack Murdock, supports him as he grows, although he is later killed by gangsters after refusing to lose a fixed match. After donning a dark red and yellow (later just red) suit, Matt seeks revenge against his father's killers as the superhero Daredevil, encountering several enemies, including Bullseye and the Kingpin. He also becomes a lawyer after graduating from Columbia Law School with his best friend and roommate, Franklin 'Foggy'. Nelson.
Daredevil has since appeared in various forms of media, including animated series, video games, and merchandise. The character was first portrayed in live action by Rex Smith in the 1989 television movie The Trial of the Incredible Hulk, and then by Ben Affleck in the 2003 film Daredevil. /i>.
Charlie Cox plays the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in the Marvel Television television series, Daredevil (2015-2018) and The Defenders (2017), returned in the Marvel Studios film Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021, cameo), the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022). He will appear for Echo (2024) and will star in his own series Daredevil: Born Again (2024) which will debut with a first season of 18 episodes.
Editorial career
Daredevil was used in the reboot initiative called "Marvel Knights" (pun with Marvel Knights and Marvel Nights), in which several collections of characters considered "vigilants" They started again from number one. The screenwriter, director and actor Kevin Smith was in charge of writing the title together with the pencils of the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, at that time, Joe Quesada. The comic Daredevil: Diablo Guardian had an acclaimed reception and gave way to another creative team that established the title as a rebirth of the character's glory. The collection was taken up by Brian Michael Bendis, whose ability for the detective genre was of vital importance for the period in question. In addition, Bendis had the help of screenwriter David Mack from issue #20 to later join artist Álex Maleev in Daredevil #25. The union between Bendis and Maleev continued until reaching the conclusion of "Murdock Papers" (Daredevil Volume 2 #1-80, Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada, David Mack, Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev).
At this point, the collection begins to depend on another great noir comic writer: Ed Brubaker, who together with the artist Michael Lark, leads Matt Murdock to confront "the man behind the curtain", which caused great problems during the hero's stay in prison. The main objective that was intended to be achieved at this stage was to show a new Vanessa Fisk (ex-wife of her arch-enemy Kingpin), author of the character's main misfortunes. When the antagonist dies, Brubaker gets an opportunity to experiment with old villains (Mr Fear) or create new ones (Lady Bullseye). During the issues this writer was in charge, the "cruel and unusual" was co-written with his former Gotham Central comic partner, Greg Rucka. Brubaker and Lark's stage ends when Daredevil becomes the leader of the organization of oriental assassins known as The Hand, who had already faced the hero before. The final number takes the added numbering of volumes 1 and 2, and the title becomes #500. (Daredevil Vol 2 #80-120 Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, Greg Rucka).
Ed Brubaker was replaced by Andy Diggle, author of the famous The Losers belonging to the Vertigo publishing house. Still, Diggle didn't come close to the quality that Bendis or Brubaker brought to the character and his mythology. The writer's contribution was the 'Shadowland' event, where Marvel heroes would unite to combat a corrupt Daredevil who had taken control over the Manhattan neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen and was acting under orders from The Hand. In this story, Matt Murdock murders his great enemy Bullseye in cold blood. Once this event is over, Diggle leaves the collection after publishing the 4-issue miniseries 'Daredevil Reborn', where he narrates the redemption that Matt goes through after 'Shadowland'. (Daredevil Dark Reign The List #1, Daredevil #501-511, Daredevil Reborn #1-4, Shadowland #1-5 Andy Diggle, Roberto de la Torre, Billy Tan)
As part of the 'Big Shots' brand, Daredevil along with Punisher and Moon Knight, restart numbering. The person in charge of the character's stories becomes veteran author Mark Waid, remembered for his time in The Flash and Captain America. The tone of the collection changes radically as the new stories of the hero begin to approach their early stages considered more "superheroic" and less dark. This fact in turn represents a closer union between the character and the Marvel Universe.
Finally, Daredevil takes part in the latest formation of The New Avengers directed by Michael Bendis, who included the character in said series during the events of "Fear Itself". (New Avengers vol 2 #16- 25. Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deodato)
Character biography
The first issue covered both the character's origins and his desire for justice for the man who had killed his father, the boxer Jack "Battler" Murdock, who raised young Matthew Murdock in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. Jack instills in Matt the importance of education and non-violence with the goal of seeing his son become a better man than himself. In the course of saving a blind man from the path of an oncoming truck, Matt is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from the vehicle. The radioactive exposure increases his remaining senses beyond normal human thresholds, allowing him to detect the shape and location of objects around him. To support his son, Jack Murdock returns to boxing under the Fixer, a known gangster and the only man willing to hire the aging boxer. When he refuses to throw a fight because his son is in the audience, he is killed by one of Fixer's men. Having promised his father that he wouldn't use physical force to deal with things, Matt makes good on that promise by adopting a new identity that can use physical force. Adorned in a yellow and black suit made from his father's boxing clothes and using his superhuman abilities, Matt takes on the assassins as the reckless superhero, unintentionally causing Fixer to suffer a fatal heart attack.
Under the tutelage of the blind martial arts master, Stick, Matt learned to master his senses and becomes a formidable fighter. Also, he attends Columbia Law School in the company of his best friend, Franklin & # 34; Foggy & # 34; Nelson.
Daredevil would be part of a series of adventures involving villains such as Kingpin, the Owl, Stilt-Man, the Gladiator and the Enforcers. In issue #16 (May 1966), he meets Spider-Man, a character who would later become one of his best hero friends. A letter from Spider-Man unintentionally exposed Daredevil's secret identity, forcing him to adopt a third identity as his twin brother Mike Murdock. He sometimes had help from the heroines Black Widow and Elektra. It is also worth highlighting the loving relationships that Matt maintains with the two recently mentioned characters.
In the stage of Bendis and Maleev, various events stand out, such as the one in which Daredevil's secret identity is revealed by a tabloid newspaper or in which the news is spread that Daredevil had definitively defeated Kingpin and He declares himself the new Kingpin of New York. To avoid disbarment, Matt was forced to publicly deny his dual identity, although the citizens of New York remain unconvinced. In another of his stories, he was imprisoned by the FBI when said organization had been publicly shamed by Murdock. This event led to the hero's confinement in a prison where he lived with many of his enemies, in the hope that he would be killed.
In July 2011 Daredevil is relaunched with the first issue of volume 3, written by Mark Waid and drawn by Paolo Rivera. Waid redefined the character by focusing primarily on his adventures and by emphasizing the character's powers and perception of the physical world. In the first issues, Murdock discovers that he cannot practice as a lawyer due to the accusations that exist about his life as a vigilante. For this reason, the Nelson and Murdock law firm begins to advise clients so that they can defend themselves in court. Some time later, Daredevil briefly joins the New Avengers in a story written by the character's previous screenwriter, Brian Michael Bendis. During the following sagas of the regular series, Foggy begins to doubt the mental stability of his friend. But, in the end it is discovered that everything is part of a plot organized by a villain. Volume 3 comes to a close with issue #36 (February 2014) in which Matt is forced to reveal his secret identity. As a result, he loses his license to practice law in New York, and decides to move to San Francisco.
The adventures of the trip from New York to San Francisco are explored by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee in the digital comic “Daredevil: Road Warrior”, reprinted as issue #0.1 of volume 4 and framed within the “All-New” event Marvel NOW!”
Affiliation groups
Although he did not officially belong to any group for a time, Daredevil is an honorary member and occasional assistant of the Defenders and the Avengers. Also, he attempted to create the group known as the Marvel Knights along with Black Widow, Moon Knight, Cloak and Dagger, and Shang-Chi. In addition, Captain America offered him to join the New Avengers, but Matt initially rejected the proposal because his civilian identity had already been revealed by the government to the media and, after a manhunt had begun against him, he did not want to involve the other members of the new Avengers team in their personal problems. As compensation for not being able to join said group, he recommended Echo (the first 'Ronin') to replace him. In the days before the events of the war between the Avengers and the X-Men, motivated by the advent of the Phoenix Force in search of Hope, Daredevil joined the New Avengers to fight on his side.
Powers and abilities
Although the character is blind after the accident he suffered when he was just a child, his "four" His remaining senses function with superhuman precision and sensitivity, granting him abilities beyond the limits of a sighted person. Few characters know that the hero cannot see. Daredevil developed a radar sense, which is similar to echolocation, an ability that allows him to perceive shapes and objects or people around him. Writer/co-creator Stan Lee said that he was concerned that blind people would be offended by the exaggerated way in which the blind person's senses were heightened, but that his fears had been assuaged by letters from organizations such as The Lighthouse for the Blind that He said that blind people greatly enjoyed reading Daredevil comics.
The Beyonder once restored Daredevil's sight, but, suspecting a trick on the Beyonder's part, Daredevil immediately insisted that his blindness be restored again. Beyonder reluctantly agreed.
When Frank Miller expanded on most of Daredevil's abilities, he attempted to make them 'extraordinary enough to be exciting, but not on par with Superman', highlighting Superman's incredibly awesome powers. When Miller joined the title in 1979, the first thing he did to the character was to "renew" the character. the radar sense of it and make it less distinctive and more believable; He wanted Daredevil to have the feeling of 'proximity'; that some martial artists claim to have. Due to the character's sensitive touch, Daredevil can read by running his fingers over letters on a page, although the laminated pages prevent him from reading ink. Daredevil has commonly used his superhuman hearing to serve as a polygraph for interrogation by listening for changes in the beat of a person's heart. This ability can be fooled if the other person's heart is not beating at a natural rhythm, as if he had an artificial pacemaker.
Just as Daredevil's other senses are stronger, they are also sensitive; His main weakness is his vulnerability to powerful sounds or smells which can temporarily weaken his radar sense. This weakness is often used to immobilize Daredevil. Alternatively, the lack of taste or smell of certain substances can be used against him, as in a case of a hallucinogenic drug designed so that Daredevil could not tell that he was drugged. His senses are very acute, capable of sensing the slightest atmospheric disturbance created moments before a teleporting character appears. People with superhuman speed, like Spider-Man, they are too fast to be detected and attacked by his radar sense.
While his radar sense mostly compensates for his blindness, it has certain limitations. You can't perceive color without touching it, and you can only read printed material if the ink is raised enough for your sense of touch. Most photographs, televisions, and computer screens are blank to him. However, the radar sense has demonstrated on numerous occasions the ability to see through walls and fabrics. The radar sense also gives it an omnidirectional field of view. These last two abilities are the most notable advantages that radar has over normal vision.
Although he has no superhuman physical attributes beyond a heightened sense of balance, Daredevil is a master of martial arts. Having been trained by Stick, Daredevil is a master hand-to-hand combatant, excelling in the use of the stick as a weapon. melee weapon that is also capable of being used at a distance by throwing it with great precision. His typical moves are unique blends of the martial arts of Ninjutsu, Daitō-ryū, Aikido, Judo, Karate, Jujitsu, Kung Fu, Silat (martial art), Capoeira, Wrestling and Eskrima combined with American style boxing. Making the most of his gymnastic abilities.
Daredevil's signature weapon is his self-designed and created cane. Disguised as a blind man's cane in civilian attire, it is an all-purpose weapon and tool that contains 30 feet of attached aviation control cable. to a hardened steel hook. Internal mechanisms allow the cable to be coiled and uncoiled perfectly, while a powerful spring releases the grapnel. The handle can be straightened for use when throwing. The staff can be divided into two parts, one of which is a combat staff and the other ends in a curved hook.
In his civilian identity, Murdock is a skilled and respected New York attorney. He is an expert detective, tracker, and interrogation expert, as well as being an expert marksman.
After his identity was publicly exposed and he was forced to move to San Francisco, Matt Murdock's secret identity as Daredevil was restored by the Purple Children, the children of his old enemy, the Purple Man. From the description given by the Purple Children, their influence makes it impossible for anyone to determine Daredevil's secret identity through deductive investigation, unless he actually tells them who is under the mask, or someone tells him. unmask.
Enemies
In his early years, Daredevil fought several costumed supervillains, the first being Electro, a prominent enemy of Spider-Man, in Daredevil #2. Several recurring villains were introduced over the years, such as the Owl, Purple Man, Mr. Fear, Stilt-Man, Gladiator, Jester, Bull-Man, and Death-Stalker. The supervillain duo of Cobra and Mr. Hyde have frequently faced off against Daredevil, and Hyde has fought Daredevil alone on several occasions. The psychotic killer Bullseye was introduced by Marv Wolfman in issue #131, and was a frequent antagonist for the next six years of the series.
Beginning with Frank Miller's run on Daredevil, his traditional rogues gallery was used less frequently, and the Kingpin became Daredevil's archenemy. Like Purple Man, Death-Stalker, Assassin, and many others, Kingpin has long known Daredevil's secret identity. His run as the series' central villain ended with issue #300, but he continues to threaten Daredevil at times. Elektra made her debut as a bounty hunter, and although her time as part of Daredevil's rogues gallery was brief (spanning just one year of the series), her romantic past with him is an important part of the mythos. In Daredevil #254, Ann Nocenti introduced Typhoid Mary, a Kingpin assassin with dissociative identity disorder (the diagnostic term for multiple personalities), who would become a prominent enemy of Daredevil.

His analysis of Natasha proved to be very accurate when she betrayed him by breaking a bottle over his head and pushing Matthew off a bridge into a canyon below. Murdoch survived and appeared again in a dark cave just in time to save Donal from being attacked by Natasha's men. Matthew tries to rescue Donal from her by taking him as far away as he can. But Natasha had the cave entrance surrounded by a garrison of men, sent by Count Otto von Doom of Latveria to capture the treasure of the old man, Donal, and Matthew Murdoch. Daredevil: End of Days is a 2013 eight-issue comic book miniseries chronicling the final days of Daredevil. Several years before his death, Daredevil confronted Kingpin when he returned to Hell's Kitchen. Fisk had made a deal with the government and Daredevil, seeing no other options to stop Fisk, killed him in front of many people on the streets. After killing Fisk, Daredevil disappeared for many years until his final battle with Bullseye, having alienated or rejected by his friends and fellow superheroes. Matt had been training Tim Urich, the adopted son of old friend Ben Urich, to become the new Daredevil. After finishing Tim's training and noticing Bullseye's return to Hell's Kitchen, Daredevil returned to prevent his past enemies from affecting his successor. His actions during his final battle drove Bullseye crazy with curiosity about the word 'Mapone', which led him to commit suicide.

Adaptations to other media
Television
Live Action
- In 1975, Angela Bowie had secured television rights for Daredevil and the Black Widow with a duration of one year to produce a television series based on the two characters. Bowie had Terry O'Neill as a photographer to take a series of photos of her as Black Widow and actor Ben Carruthers as Daredevil (with Natasha Korniloff wardrobe), but this project never came to be done.
- In 1983, ABC planned a pilot Daredevil live action. The winner of the Academy Award, Stirling Silliphant, completed the draft of the program, but it was not issued.
- His first appearance was as a co-star in the film The Judgment of the Incredible Hulk. When David Banner (Bill Bixby) is arrested, Matt Murdock helps prove Banner's innocence. Daredevil tells Banner his origins, which in this version implies that Murdock was inspired by a police officer to become a hero. Later, with the help of Hulk, he fought Kingpin (John Rhys-Davies), and only called Wilson Fisk here. Without failing to be quite faithful to the material of origin of the reckless comic books, the greatest change was that Daredevil's traditional costume, including his horns, was replaced by a black ninja outfit. Daredevil would later use a similar black outfit in the Daredevil miniserie: Frank Miller's Man without Fear and John Romita Jr. in 1993, as well as in the Marvel television series.
Animation
- Daredevil makes his first appearance on television like Matt Murdock on Spider-Man and His Amazing FriendsIn the episode "Aracnoid Attack", with the voice of Frank Welker. He served as Spider-Man lawyer at the time he was framed by Zoltan Amadeus.
- In the 1980s, the ABC had planned a lively TV series of Daredevil accompanied by a guide dog called "The Super-Perro Lightning." Television writer Mark Evanier said in 2008 that he was the last in a long series of screenwriters who had written a pilot and episodes of the series. However, this initiative was not carried out either.
- Daredevil appeared as co-protagonist in the animated series of the 90s Spider-Man in the episodes "Indicted"and..."The man without fear"with the voice of Edward Albert. His classic blindness occurred after he accidentally saw his father participate in something highly illegal. After Jack Murdock was dismissed by Kingpin, Matt Murdock was trained by Stick, which led him to become Daredevil. Years later, J. Jonah Jameson hired Matt Murdock to defend Peter Parker when Richard Fisk framed him for industrial espionage. These episodes were later incorporated into the film directly animated to DVD Daredevil vs Spider-Man.
