Cyclohexane is a cycloalkane (or alicyclic hydrocarbon) made up of 6 carbon atoms and 12 hydrogen atoms, so its formula is C6H< sub>12. The carbon chain is closed in the form of a ring. It is a nonpolar solvent widely used with solutes of the same type. It is obtained from the cyclization of aliphatic compounds, or from the reduction of benzene with hydrogen at high pressures in the presence of a catalyst. It melts when it reaches 7°C. One of its most important applications is the production of nylon (nylon).
