Cyangugu
Cyangugu, also known as Ciangugu or "Shangugu", is a city in southwestern Rwanda, belonging to the Western province, next to the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, next to Lake Kivu. It is separated from this country by the Ruzizi River, which is crossed in the city by two bridges. It is the capital of the Rusizi district.
The settlement has two main areas: Cyangugu itself, the sparsely populated lakeside district, and Kamembe, which concentrates industry and transportation north of the city. It has an airport that connects 3 times a week with Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
The city is located near the Nyungwe Forest, a tourist enclave that is one of the last remaining forested areas in the country, home to chimpanzees and many other primate species.
The population in 2002 was approximately 19,900 inhabitants.
