Culture of Tajikistan
Tajikistan's culture was originally shared with that of Uzbekistan but, during the communist era, the region's cultural fabric was disrupted by the Soviet leadership, which imposed artificial borders and the notion of 'nation-state', something that did not exist until that moment. This has not been entirely negative, as Tajikistan was known for its passion for theater and its famous novelists during the Soviet era. Among these writers there were individuals who tried to purify the Tajik language by tying it more closely with Persian and eliminating "borrowed" Arabs.
The majority of Tajikistan's citizens are Muslims. The impact of Islam has grown in recent years, and it was a strong bond during the years of fighting against the Soviet Union and during the civil war. Historically, much of Tajik culture is linked to that of Persia since over the centuries, that empire occupied this region, giving life to Persian writers, scientists and poets such as Ibn Sina, Firdusi, Rudaki and Omar Khayyam. The largest Christian denominations according to the World Christian Encyclopedia are the Russian Orthodox Church, the Lutheran Reformed Church, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
