Cuatro Caminos Station
Cuatro Caminos is a station on lines 1, 2 and 6 of the Madrid Metro located under the Cuatro Caminos roundabout, on the border between the districts of Chamberí and Tetuán.
The station has the particularity of being the deepest station of the Madrid Metro: the platforms of line 6 are 45 m below street level. In terms of absolute depth (altitude with respect to sea level) it is not the deepest in the network, other stations on line 6 are at a lower altitude above sea level.
History
Cuatro Caminos is one of the 8 stations of the first section of the Madrid Metro (Sol - Cuatro Caminos) inaugurated on October 17, 1919 by Alfonso XIII. The platforms were initially 60 m long, and were extended to 90 m (to the south) in the 60s creating a new access. They are located under Santa Engracia street, in the same way as the lobby, very close to the Cuatro Caminos roundabout. On March 6, 1929, line 1 was extended from Cuatro Caminos to Tetuán, ceasing to be a terminal station.
The platforms of line 2 were inaugurated on September 10, 1929 for the extension of line 2 from Quevedo to Cuatro Caminos, since then being the end of the line. The station has a central platform and a lateral platform 60 m long. It is the only one along with Argüelles and Puerta de Arganda with this layout, and at the same time being the only station on line 2 (since the rest of the stations on that line have two side platforms). The platforms are located under Bravo Murillo street, to the south of the Cuatro Caminos roundabout at the same depth as those of line 1.
And on October 11, 1979, the platforms of line 6 were inaugurated with the first section of it (Cuatro Caminos - Pacífico). Later, on January 13, 1987, this line would be extended from Cuatro Caminos to Ciudad Universitaria. The platforms are located deeper than those of the other lines and under Raimundo Fernández Villaverde street immediately to the east of the Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos. Line 6 station was renovated by changing marble walls to white vitrex.
When the flyover over the roundabout was dismantled and the underpass for automobiles was built (2004-2005), it was located in the free space in the subsoil that remained between lines 1 and 2 and line 6, leaving in At that time, the hole was prepared so that the station could accommodate, in the distant future, the extension of metro line 3 from Moncloa passing through the Philippine Islands.
Since July 3, 2016, the platforms of line 1 at the station have been closed due to works to improve the facilities on the line between the Plaza de Castilla and Sierra de Guadalupe stations. The completion of The works were scheduled for November 12, 2016, but the station became the provisional head of the northern section of Line 1 on September 14, 2016, when the Plaza de Castilla-Cuatro Caminos and Alto del Arenal-Sierra sections reopened de Guadalupe due to the completion of the works. In these two sections, the work carried out consisted of cleaning and consolidating the tunnel, the installation of the rigid catenary and the assembly of the rest of the facilities and services. The total resumption of the service of the Line 1 at the station occurred on November 13, 2016, when service between the Cuatro Caminos and Atocha Renfe stations was restored. In this other section, the actions carried out were: the waterproofing and consolidation of the tunnel, the oldest of the Madrid underground, which was reinforced by means of cement injections and special concrete projections with metallic support meshes, and the installation of the rigid catenary, as well as the assembly of the rest of the facilities and services.
On April 1, 2017, the special hours for all lobbies that closed at 9:40 p.m. were eliminated, along with the absence of personnel in said lobbies.
On July 15, 20, 23, 27 and 30 and August 3, 5 and 7, 2021, the platforms of line 2 closed at 10 p.m. (instead of 1:30 a.m.) for works on the Quevedo-Cuatro Caminos section. Lines 1 and 6 were not affected.
Between 2021 and 2022 it has been renovated: the lobby and platforms of lines 1 and 2 were replaced with white tiles; the mural of line 2 shows a chronological exposition of the metro service, from its opening in 1919 to the present day, and the Reina Victoria access mouth (pares) recovered the historical totem that was preserved in the past, with the name of the station engraved on it his column.
