Cthulhu (pronounced in Spanish as Kazulu, or Chulu depending on the translation[citation required ]) is a cosmic entity created by American horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft and first depicted in the short story The Call of Cthulhu (The Call of Cthulhu), published in the American magazine Weird Tales in 1928. Considered an Ancient One among cosmic entities, the creature has since appeared in numerous references in popular culture. Cthulhu is described as the convergence between an octopus, a dragon, and a humanoid-shaped creature.

The literary universe of cosmic horror (mainly between 1921 and 1935) and developed around Cthulhu by Lovecraft himself and other writers of the Lovecraft Circle are known as the Cthulhu Mythos. The prophecies say that when the cosmic cycle ends the great Cthulhu will awaken from his slumber in R'lyeh and will rule the earth and destroy all who do not mention the words: "Cthulhu R'lyeh Ph';nglui mglw'nafh wgah'nagl fhtagn" before the great Cthulhu.

Features

Cthulhu is a character drawn from the literature of H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft formed, in some of his stories, a mythology of horror based on the existence of parallel universes and beings from them - among which is Cthulhu - who existed "before time", and whose contact with humans has dire consequences. Within his stories, the theme is primordial chaos, and Lovecraft introduces the notion that everything we know makes sense only within our space-time; when an event occurs that breaks with space-time the madness begins.

Within this cosmology, known as the Cthulhu Mythos, Cthulhu is an emblem, central character, and one of the recurring figures: he is one of the most powerful and most popular of all these beings, and plays a central role in the story Call of Cthulhu.

Cthulhu is an alien creature whose physical characteristics and abilities make him godlike to humans. The main followers and servants of him are the starseed of Cthulhu. In the novel In the Mountains of Madness it is said that small offspring of Cthulhu were at war with various races in the distant past, on planet Earth. He is also worshiped by most of the Deep Ones, half-human, half-batrachian beings who inhabit the oceans. Above the Great Old Ones are the Outer Gods, though Lovecraft's universe doesn't lend itself much to hierarchical rungs. According to his human followers, Cthulhu is the high priest of these beings.

It is described —precisely in the story Call of Cthulhu— as "a monster with vaguely anthropoid outlines, but with an octopus head whose face was a mass of tentacles, a scaly body that suggested a certain elasticity, four extremities endowed with enormous claws, and a pair of long narrow wings on the back". It has the ability to alter its shape, although it is always basically the same. Its scaly body is composed of a substance different from those found on our planet, a kind of gelatinous mass that makes it practically indestructible. Regardless, even if his physical body is completely destroyed (which is highly unlikely), his otherworldly nature would make him re-form within hours. He was one of the conquerors of the Earth and ruled from the depths of the ocean.

According to mythology, Cthulhu lies dreaming under a seal in the sunken city of R'lyeh (somewhere in the Pacific Ocean). He hopes to escape one day (the day "The Stars Are in Position Again") with the help of cults and sects to once again extend his power on Earth. To him they recite "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" which roughly means "In the City of R'lyeh, the deceased Cthulhu, wait dreaming."

Pronunciation

There is no agreement regarding the pronunciation of the name. Lovecraft transcribed it as «Khlûl'hloo» IPA [xlulhlu], Latin American Spanish «chukhúltu» «jluljlu» or «Kathooloo» IPA [kaθu'lu], Spanish «kazulú» (with Iberian pronunciation on the z) or "'ku'tuku'looθ". [k.θulxu], [k.tu'lu], [k.θu'lu], [θetu'lu], [θeθul'hu], [ʧulu], [& #39;tulu], ['xhukutulju], [θulu], [kuθulu] or [katulu], [C-tulu], [Khulu't] as valid pronunciations, but it is agreed that the form The most appropriate way to do it cannot theoretically be pronounced by the human voice apparatus. The lack of precision is typical of the author in his descriptions [citation needed ] .

The Starseed of Cthulhu

Cthulhu's minions are beings similar to Cthulhu himself, but smaller: followers and servants of Cthulhu, just like their master, can slightly alter their form.

They arrived together with their master on Earth, and the vast majority are imprisoned with Cthulhu on R'lyeh, or on distant worlds, such as Aldebaran; but some are free.

They serve Cthulhu by carrying out his wishes, and have waged wars with other beings. It was thus that upon arriving on Earth with him, they fought with the Ancients and built the city of R'Lyeh.
