The province of Cordillera is one of the six into which the Metropolitan region of Santiago is divided, being the one located to the east of it. It occupies a small area of the intermediate depression, filled with glacial, fluvial and volcanic sediments, and from the Andes mountain range to the international border with Argentina. Its capital is the commune of Puente Alto.

Population

The Province of Cordillera has an area of 5616 km² and has a population of 702,948 inhabitants. It is made up of the communes of:

  • Alto Bridge
  • San José de Maipo
  • Pirque

In the Province of Cordillera, the exploitation of gypsum in El Volcán, Cajón del Maipo sector, stands out. The waters of the Maipo River support an agriculture that is characterized by the presence of fruit trees and the development of vineyards destined for the wine industry. The paper industry (Puente Alto paper mill) and the flour industry (Puente Alto Mill) generate large sources of employment.

In 2018, the number of companies registered in the province of Cordillera was 8,415. The Economic Complexity Index (ECI) in the same year was 0.77, while the economic activities with the highest Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index were Manufacture of Smoked, Salted, Dehydrated and Similar Products (52.47), Cultivation of Spices (48.98) and Professional Services in Geology and Prospecting (37.4).

Tourism

Cajón del Maipo

El Cajón del Maipo is one of the most visited destinations in the province, since it can be reached by paved road to the high mountain range. It can be a pleasant walk in spring and in winter you can also visit its water hot springs with natural salts; Among these hot springs, Baños Morales, Baños Colina and Del Plomo stand out.

El Cajón del Maipo also has several country clubs, the most notable of which is the famous Las Vizcachas country club (located in the eastern area of Puente Alto), and the racetrack of the same name. El Cajón del Maipo is located 25.5 km from Santiago.

Lagunillas is a ski center with all the facilities required to enjoy winter sports, its access road is located at the exit of San José de Maipo.

Pirque

In Pirque, its beautiful parish stands out, its beautiful typical area when entering from Av. Concha y Toro, turn right to see the beautiful Concha y Toro vineyard. The Concha y Toro vineyard is one of the largest vineyards in Chile and one of the most advanced. You can get to know this vineyard through a tourist tour.

The Arcayan

The Principal

Río Clarillo National Park

It offers pre-mountain landscapes in the Clarillo River basin. In addition, you can see mountains with cacti, vegetation with forests and sclerophytic bushes, abundant in the ravines. The Clarillo River runs transparently over rock formations with curious formations, which form beautiful natural pools for safe bathing, and has equipped picnic areas and interpretation trails.
