A coracha is a wall canvas that protects the communication between a fortress and a specific point that is not far from said fortification. Most commonly, it is used to protect access to the water supply site when it is outside the fortified enclosure. The coracha usually ends in a "water tower" that protects the well or supply source inside. Sometimes its parapet can have a double parapet, since it can be attacked from both flanks.

Because it is a defensive element that only exists in the Iberian Peninsula, there are no corresponding place names in other European languages (except in the Portuguese language, couraça and in the Catalan language, cuirassa).
