The province of Condorcanqui is one of the seven that make up the department of Amazonas in northeastern Peru. It borders on the northwest with Ecuador; by the east, with the department of Loreto; to the south, with the provinces of Bongará and Utcubamba, and to the southwest, with the province of Bagua.

It was the main place where the Cenepa war took place in 1995.

Political creation

The province of Condorcanqui was established by Law No. 23832, of May 18, 1984, promulgated by Fernando Belaúnde Terry in his second government.

Geography

This province is the northernmost in the region and the largest. The Cenepa armed conflict between the republics of Peru and Ecuador took place in its territory in 1995.

Political division

This province is divided into three districts:

  1. The Cenepa
  2. Nieva
  3. Río Santiago

Capital

The capital of this province is the city of Santa María de Nieva, located at 222 m s. no. m.

Tourism

  • Pongo de Manseriche (Rio Santiago district): It is a 12 km long parade of 45 m wide (in its narrowest part), which concentrates the waters to cause a noise that extends over several kilometers to the round.

Religion

From the hierarchical point of view of the Catholic Church, it is part of the Apostolic Vicariate of San Francisco Javier, also known as the Apostolic Vicariate of Jaén in Peru.
