Colpodium

Colpodium is a genus of herbaceous plants belonging to the Poaceae family. It is native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere at high altitudes. It comprises 70 described species and of these, only 22 accepted.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Carl Bernhard von Trinius and published in Fundamenta Agrostographiae 119, pl. 7. 1820.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 2, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 4, or 8 (in Keniochloa) OR 28 (C. Colchicum, Paracolpodium), since there are diploid species and a polyploid series. Relatively "large" chromosomes.

Etymology

Colpodium: Generic name derived from Greek kolpos (a bay or gulf), referring to emarginated (?) lemmas.
