The term cohort (also, cohorts) can refer, in this encyclopedia:

  • to the cohort romana tactical infantry unit of the former Roman army;
  • to the urban cohortsone of the units of the garrison of Rome (an elite unit of the Roman army, created by the Emperor Augustus);
  • Al cohort studyan epidemiological study that compares the frequency of disease between two populations, one of which is exposed to a particular exposure factor (or risk factor), to which the other is not exposed;
  • to one cohort statistica group of subjects who share a specific characteristic (usually, age), such as the demographic cohort;
  • a cohort of educational groupa group of people who work together on the basis of a basic curriculum, in order to obtain the same academic degree or to develop the same project.
