Codex Alimentarius Austriacus
The Codex Alimentarius Austriacus was established in 1891 by the Austrian trade commission of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as a group of standards and descriptions describing a wide variety of foods and food products.
The codex consists of three volumes, which were completed between 1910 and 1917 by O. Dafert. It was commonly used as a reference by many courts in the Germanic world to determine the identity and quality of specific foods. It was not integrated into Austrian food laws until 1975.
In its time, it was an exemplary work on food. As such, it became the model for the later Codex Alimentarius Europeus which was the precursor to the Codex Alimentarius. The latter is the current international codex for foods developed collaboratively within the framework of FAO and WHO.
