The codex Abrogans is a codex containing what is probably the oldest surviving book written in German. In fact, the book is a handwritten dictionary that translates words from Latin to Old High German, as well as a glossary or word list of synonyms for the century VIII (765-775). It contains about 3,670 German words in more than 14,600 references. It was copied several times; However, only one copy remains to the present, preserved in the Sankt Gallen Library. The name is due to the first entry in the glossary, namely abrogans: 'modesty, humility'. Sporadically, this work has been attributed by different authors to the Arebeus clergyman of Freising (Freising) (723-783 or 784).
