CodeWeavers is a company that develops a modified version of wine called CrossOver, to run Windows applications on Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and Solaris. The company was founded in 1996 as a consultancy, eventually shifting entirely to Wine Development and Support. CrossOver is regularly updated with the latest free wine patches; likewise, patches made by company employees are sent to the original project immediately. This differentiates the company from TransGaming, which distributes a derivative version of Wine called Cedega, and does not freely return contributions to Wine. CodeWeavers is the largest contributor to the Wine project, an open source project that helps Windows applications run on different operating systems under the x86 architecture, and employs the project's maintainer, Alexandre Julliard, as its CTO.
