Coayllo District
The Coayllo district is one of the sixteen that make up the province of Cañete, located in the department of Lima, in the constituency of the Regional Government of Lima-Provinces, in Peru. Its capital is Coayllo.
Within the ecclesiastical division of the Catholic Church of Peru, it belongs to the Prelature of Yauyos
History
Coayllo is one of the oldest towns in Cañete. This town was famous for being the land of priests and healers, a fame that has now been lost.
Its temple is quite a relic, as it was built between 1556 and 1571, by the Dominican priests.
It was created in the early years of the Republic with the presence of the Liberator José de San Martín in Peru, with the division from then on into departments, provinces and districts. Republican life began as one of the eight districts of the Province of Cañete, which also included Chilca, Mala, San Vicente, Pacarán, Chincha Alta, Chincha Baja and Lunahuaná.
Geography
It covers an area of 590.99 km² and is located at km 101 of the South Pan-American Highway, it has an altitude of 225 ms. no. m. and has three main annexes: San Juan de Quisque, Santa Rosa de Cata and Uquira. It has a warm climate all year round.
Tourism
Coayllo, called "Land of the Loquats" or "Land of the Witches", is an eminently tourist area. In it you can see its old church dating from 1594 and restored in 1914 (although seriously damaged by the 2007 earthquake) and the archaeological site of Uquira, with its palaces, ceremonial squares and a necropolis located 3 km from the center of the district. In them is the stone representation of the popular legend of "The Condor and the Serpent" the star stone and other myths.
