CNN+ was an open television channel in Spanish that broadcast news. It was launched on January 27, 1999. CNN+ was produced by the Compañía Independiente de Noticias de Televisión, a company 50% owned by the Spanish company Sogecable (since 2010, Prisa TV) and another 50% by the American company Turner Broadcasting. System, owner of the CNN news network.

Since its appearance on DTT, it shared structure and writing with Noticias Cuatro. In 2009, moreover, it integrated its cnnplus.com website with that of Noticias Cuatro. The flagship program of that website, El informative en la red, came to have a single edition and to be presented by faces from one channel or another indistinctly.

Until the end of broadcasting, its central studios were located in the Sogecable building, located in the Madrid town of Tres Cantos.

It could be seen through the satellite television platform Canal+ (then Digital+) and on Movistar Imagenio, and also for free through digital terrestrial television in the multiplex that belonged to Sogecable and, for the rest of the world, through the Internet.

The channel ended its broadcasts on December 28, 2010 at 0:00 hours due to the merger of Gestevisión Telecinco with Sogecuatro. CNN+ was replaced by the channel Big Brother 24 hours, which occupied its frequency on DTT temporarily until March 1, 2011, when it was replaced by Divinity.

Broadcast time

Sogecable's contract with CNN expired in January 2009, although it was temporarily extended until the cessation of broadcasts on December 28, 2010.

From January 1, 2009 until the end of broadcasts, the channel broadcast the ONCE Draw as well as micro-reports on the social work of this organization that helps people with disabilities.

To settle the market before the already completed analog blackout (April 2, 2010), CNN+ premiered new programming in the first quarter of 2010.

On January 14, 2010, the wake-up show Matinal Cuatro/CNN+ (from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.) simulcast with Cuatro. On February 8, 2010, the new nightly program Hoy (from 10:00 PM to 12:00 AM). March 2010, the new evening show Face to Face: Live Afternoon (from 5:00 pm) launched to 8:00 pm). On March 15, 2010, the new morning show La mañana en directo (from 9:30am to 1:00pm).

On February 13, 2010, the channel launched a change of corporate image with the change of decorations and graphics. These changes together with the premiere of the new news magazines are due to the effort of the channel to dissociate itself from Noticias Cuatro (after the merger by absorption of Sogecuatro by Gestevisión Telecinco) to turn it into a channel of current affairs and news programs and leave behind the programming "todonoticias" with the usual round of information.

On the future of CNN+ on DTT, at the beginning of 2010, the information was contradictory: while in January 2010 it was indicated that CNN+ would abandon DTT to make way for a new Telecinco news channel, in March of that same year, in the midst of the renewal of the channel's programming, it was reported that CNN+ was not included in the merger agreement between Gestevisión Telecinco and Sogecuatro, since Gestevisión Telecinco ceded one of its 8 signals to Sogecable to manage it in its entirety for free broadcast, that of CNN+.

Finally, on December 10, 2010, the news was confirmed that the PRISA group would close the channel on December 31, 2010, transferring all its workers to the news agency Atlas, owned by from Telecinco.

From December 31, 2010 to March 1, 2011, Big Brother 24 hours was temporarily available on DTT on the virtual channel occupied by CNN+. In March 2011, GH24 was replaced by Divinity, a Telecinco channel for female audiences that broadcasts soap operas, movies, series and programs. In November 2011, one of its presenters, Esther Cervera Barriga, published the book on the history and journalistic work of the channel. "CNN+. Much more than news. 12 years of journalism and continuous information", from the editorial Fragua.

Internal organization

Its operation has been innovative in the field of television since it was, after the 24-hour channel of Televisión Española, a pioneer in continuous information in Spain. Its structure was as follows:

  • Drafting. It is divided into three sections: National, International and Economics. It is considered that the editors must be "all-terrain" and capable of covering any news, although some editors and reporters acquire more specialization. The computer system used is the Avid, both for writing and for assembly. As for the correspondents, CNN+ has two in the United States, one in Washington D.C. and one in Atlanta from where its entire audiovisual and informative relationship with CNN is managed, taking its images, satellite signals from all over the planet and even making use of its correspondents in both Spanish and English-speaking countries. They also own correspondents in Brussels, Buenos Aires, Jerusalem, London, Paris, Beijing, Rabat and Rome. This channel only has autonomous delegations in Bilbao, Seville and Barcelona (the latter covers mainly Catalonia, and finally the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands), since for the rest of the areas of Spain it travels to special envoys and contracts the technical realization to an external producer.
  • Online production. This section is responsible for creating the emission ladders as, against all that can be thought, CNN+ does not usually broadcast live except for appearances, press wheels or relevant events (in addition to the absence of a real night writing shift as there is only one editor who prepares the newscalet for the matinal team but he alone, without presenter or control or performing staff).
  • Traffic. They are responsible for blocking emission steps with advertising, thematic spaces and special programmes of the channel.
  • Appropriations. Equivalent to the traditional program production department. Manage satellite signals, remember interviews, make informative forecasts or, for putting any other example, locate any character, famous or expert necessary for a program.
  • Documentation. In charge of locating the images in the file for later dumping them in the channel computer system.
  • Amount. CNN+ mounters are responsible for editing the videos that either because of their technical complication or the need to be edited quickly, they are not able editors to do them themselves. There are few since it is part of the premise that they are the editors who control their piece or video from beginning to end, a decision that saves a lot of money to any television network, at the cost of sacrificing quality in the final product, since the formation of journalism lacks the necessary knowledge in audiovisual language and equipment operation.
  • Links. The signals of national and international news agencies and all the material that comes to the wording (video tapes, DVDs, etc.)
  • Realization, control and sound.
  • Editors. The editors are usually three a day and their functions are the usual editing of texts of the editors, news control, etc.
  • Graphism. Department for the development of all CNN+ and News Four graphics elements. The main program used is VizIVAArtist, which allows real-time graphics.
  • Cameras.
  • Continuity.
  • Sonorization.
  • Self-promotion. It is responsible for publicizing the programs of the chain.
  • Drafting secretariat.
  • Drivers and messengers.
  • Human resources and staff.
