Capital of the Duchy of Cleves. In 1614, through the Treaty of Xanten, the city was annexed to Brandenburg. Between 1629-1635 and 1636-1672 it was occupied by the United Provinces of the Netherlands. Spain took it in 1624-1629, and together with the fortress of Schenkenschanz, between 1635-1636 after their victory at the siege of Leuven.

The Siegfried Line was a defense system along 630 km, which began at Cleves on the southern border with the Netherlands, and ended at the border with Switzerland. Unlike the Maginot line, it was intended for propaganda purposes and was built between 1938 and 1940.
