Clavileno

Don Quixote and Sancho "flying" with Clavileño (Ricardo Balaca, centuryXIX).

Clavileño is the name of the wooden horse with which some dukes play a joke on Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in the second part, chapters XL and XLI of the novel by Miguel de Cervantes.

Clavileño el Alígero, as its name and nickname indicate, is a wooden structure in the shape of a horse with a peg in the head with which its movements are controlled, which is presented to the mocked as a being capable of flying lightly up to the skies.

La Dueña Dolorida (Countess Trifaldi) assures them that only if Don Quixote and Sancho ride across the sky on Clavileño's back can she and other maidens be freed from the growth of thick beards that afflicts them because of an enchantment. When the charming Malambruno sends the machine, a terrified Sancho refuses but reluctantly agrees. They both ride blindfolded on the horse's back and a series of moves and tricks make them believe they are actually flying.
