The Claudio Rooster (Foghorn Leghorn in its original version) is an animated rooster that appears in many Warner Brothers cartoons such as Looney Tunes and Animated Fantasies of Yesterday and Today. He was created by Robert McKimson and Warren Foster and starred in 28 animated shorts from 1946 to 1956. All of these animations were directed by McKimson.

Inspiration

The character of Gallo Claudio is directly inspired by the character of Senator Claghorn, a politician from the southern United States played by comedian Kenny Delmar, and who frequently appeared on the Fred Allen Show, a popular radio program. the 1940s. Claudio used many of Claghorn's phrases, such as 'It's a joke, I mean, it's a joke, son.' Delmar had based his character on a Texas rancher who spoke that way.Leghorn is a breed of chicken from the Tuscany region of Italy; and foghorn (lit. esp.: "foghorn") describes the strong and dominant voice of the character.

According to American critic and historian Leonard Maltin, the character's voice was also inspired by a hearing-impaired character from the 1930s radio show Blue Monday Jamboree, known simply like The Sheriff. The voice bears a certain similarity to another Mel Blanc character: Yosemite Sam (Friz Freleng's character); and it is even more similar in an early version of Sam in the animated series Stage Door Cartoon. He usually faces George the Dog, Quique Gavilan, Sylvester the cat and Daffy Duck.

Biography

Claudio is depicted as an anthropomorphic adult white rooster, of tall stature, with a stereotypical southern American accent, with a 'Good ol' style of speaking. boy", and a penchant for mischief. The first half of his name is a mockery of himself for being loud and obnoxious, while the second part refers to the leghorn breed of chicken. His first appearance was in 1946 in a film by Quique Gavilán titled Walky Talky Hawky. All Claudio Rooster animations were directed by Robert McKimson, and he competes alongside the Tazman Devil as the most popular character associated with the director.

Many of the jokes involve Claudio and his canine enemy (formally known as The Barnyard Dawg, although in early sketches of the model he is called the dog George). Contrary to other rivalries in Looney Tunes - with the exception of the Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner series - it can be either Claudius the Rooster or the dog who makes the first attack.

Claudio is accompanied in some episodes by a weasel called 'Bill', who initially tries to eat the rooster, but they end up joining together to bother George the dog.

Other recurring themes throughout the animated series include little Quique Gavilán's attempts to catch and eat Claudio; and the rooster's efforts to woo Miss Prissy the hen, often caring for her bookish son, Egghead Jr..

In the original version, Claudio's voice was created by voice actor Mel Blanc.

The Spanish version of the Claudio cartoons generated many popular phrases such as "Throw the ball boy!" when he teaches Cabeza de Huevo Jr. to throw a ball and makes excessive use of the phrase 'I say'. Other memorable phrases are "I say son, I say son I say", "Don't get together with that buuuut, sonoooo,", and when Quique Gavilán tries to eat him: "Hey, boy, I say, I say, boy!". The Spanish voice in the dubbing for Latin America was done by Mexican actors Ismael Larumbe and Víctor Manuel Castro; later by Octavio Rojas.
