Ciudadela is a town in the Tres de Febrero district, in the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the western area of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area (AMBA) bordering the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, whose interjurisdictional border is General Paz Avenue. The center of Ciudadela is located 1.3 km from the access to the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.

Toponymy

This area had several names: it was first known as "Rancho de Castro", then as "Villa Liniers" and finally "Ciudadela".

During the English Invasions of Buenos Aires, Santiago de Liniers recruited men, horses and other resources in the area; For this reason he would have honored the military hero of that time by naming the place after him. However, this name was lost at the hands of the current one, which would be due to the Liniers military barracks completed in 1902. These barracks, the most important in the country at the time, had large red walls and battlements of the same color. defense mode and fortifiers; This external appearance of a small walled city would have been what led to the area being called Ciudadela.

Another version indicates that it is in homage to the population of Ciudadela de Menorca (known in Catalan as Ciutadella de Menorca), on the island of Menorca, belonging to the Spanish archipelago of the Balearic Islands.

A final version asserts that it is in honor of the homonymous town in the province of Tucumán, where General San Martín devised his liberating feat.

History

It was December 1, 1910 when Ciudadela was founded, a town inhabited by Italian immigrants. One of the first to come was Don Bernardino Frione in 1865. In the beginning, these lands belonged to different parties. First to the La Matanza party, but when the Morón party separated, what is now Ciudadela became part of the latter. Years later, Morón gave lands for the creation of the San José de Flores district, where Ciudadela passed. When the lands of the latter party were federalized for the creation of the Federal Capital in 1888, Ciudadela fell under the orbit of the newly created party of General San Martín. In 1959, the Tres de Febrero district was created with lands to the south and west of San Martín, among which was Ciudadela. In summary, the lands occupied by the town of Ciudadela were part of five parties: La Matanza, Morón, the disappeared San José de Flores, San Martín and Tres de Febrero, a party of which Ciudadela continues to be a part.

Like most of the towns in the area, in the beginning the lands of Ciudadela were villas that surrounded the city of Buenos Aires. They were subdivided and populated. The place had some importance due to the presence of a post in the same place where the station is. However, the arrival of the railway and the opening of roads were the main drivers of human settlement in these lands. In 1865, Don Bernardino Frione settled down from Italy, bought twenty blocks of land and built his house at the same time that he began to exploit the production of a farm and a warehouse, known as “De los Gauchos”, a business that together with that of Baldomero López, both located on the old Real Street (current Gaona) were the only businesses in the northern part.

In 1902 the military barracks were installed, which gave greater impetus to the young population. The actual founding of the city is celebrated on December 1, 1910, together with the inauguration of the western railway, although in reality the formal founding of the town originates with the decision of the firm Santamarina y Cía. (union of several families in the area) to divide up some 65 hectares in order to create a new town. The company began sales on November 11 and was quickly successful.

In 1917 the first school was installed. In 1959 the Professor Ramón Carrillo hospital was inaugurated. With the creation of the Tres de Febrero party that year from land from the San Martín party, the town of Ciudadela passed to the new party. In 1960, the Tres de Febrero volunteer fire department was created, based in this town.

In 1973, under the presidency of Héctor Cámpora, the monoblock housing complex called Barrio Ejercito de los Andes, known as Fuerte Apache, was inaugurated.

In 1993, after the transfer of the military units residing in the area, the barracks became the headquarters of the Army Historical Museum.
