Cisneros is a municipality in Colombia, located in the Northeast subregion of the department of Antioquia. It limits to the north with the municipality of Yolombó, to the east with the municipalities of Yolombó and Santo Domingo, and to the south with Santo Domingo.

History

Locomotivea 45

It was founded at the same time as the inauguration of the train service of the Antioquia Railroad, inhabited years ago by indigenous Tahamíes who practiced agriculture, goldsmithing and ceramics. In 1898 it was decided that La Quiebra would bear the name of "Cisneros", surname of the Cuban engineer Javier Cisneros, responsible for the construction of the Antioquia railroad. It is in 1923 when the town acquires the status of municipality. At 2:00 p.m. m. on the afternoon of Thursday, February 3, 1910, with the assistance of the President of the Republic, General Ramón González Valencia, his Minister of Public Works, Dr. Carlos J. Delgado; General Pedro Nel Ospina; Dr. Carlos E. Restrepo, Nicolás Esguerra, Antonio José Uribe, Enrique W. Fernández, Carlos Cock, Manager of the Antioquia Railway, Dr. Jorge Páez G, chief engineer of the company and high-ranking personalities from Medellín, solemnly inaugurated the Railway Station. Cisneros of the Antioquia Railroad.

This and no other, is the origin of the population, and this is also the exact date of its foundation. It is therefore Cisneros, work of the Antioquia Railroad. For many years it was the Cisneros Station, the terminal of the Nús del Ferrocarril line that would connect Medellín with the Magdalena River.

And as this terminal station, with large warehouses for the storage of goods that were waiting to cross the mountain range on the back of a mule, it was taking on great economic importance, as the large industrialists and merchants of Medellín decided to establish their distribution factories to supply the trade of the entire region at better prices than they had to establish by taking the merchandise to the capital and then returning it to the towns.

And that's how the new population began to increase greatly until it attracted the core of merchants who settled there permanently.

Another of the factors that greatly contributed to the development of Cisneros was the inability in which the Antioquia Railroad Company found itself for a long time to undertake the extremely valuable and admirable work of the La Quiebra Tunnel, which made the merchants contributed good premises and comfortable houses for their businesses and housing.

It bears its name in memory of the illustrious Cuban engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros, who dedicated a large part of his life to making the portentous work of the Antioquia Railroad a reality. Until 1923, it was Cisneros Corregimiento de Santo Domingo, but the enormous development of the hamlet, its unusual commercial movement, the drive of its children, its privileged situation, and the civic spirit of its leaders prevailed before the Departmental Government, obtaining of the Assembly the Ordinance number 11, of April 13, 1923 that created the municipality with autonomous life, segregating it from Santo Domingo.

This Ordinance was signed by Dr. Jesús María Yépes as President of the Assembly and sanctioned by Dr. Ricardo Jiménez Jaramillo as Governor. On July 1 of the same year, the first municipal council was installed, made up of Santiago López, Isaías Cuartas, Rafael Castaño, Delfín Quintero, Juan de Dios Ceballos and Luis Gómez. Cisneros' progress took place like a lightning bolt, a lightning bolt that spread with the opening of the Bankruptcy Tunnel, receiving a severe blow to the economy of the population; but, thanks to the iron strength of his sons, they managed to endure it without letting themselves be reduced.

When that transitory movement ended, the inhabitants of Cisneros were able to continue their lives with another source of wealth; agriculture and industries themselves, as well as trade to supply many neighboring towns. Thus, after this brief collapse, he once again set out on paths of definitive progress.

A humble chapel that was kept for worship in Cisneros, was soon replaced, with the efforts of the inhabitants, in a modern temple that is considered the most beautiful work in the city. In a beautiful park stands the bronze bust of Dr. Tulio Vásquez, who fought like no one else in Cisneros for material progress while consecratingly watching over the health of all its inhabitants.
