The district of Cieneguilla is one of the forty-three districts that make up the province of Lima, located in the department of the same name, in Peru. It limits to the north, with the districts of Ate and Chaclacayo; to the east, with the district of Antioquia, province of Huarochirí; and to the south and west, with the district of Pachacámac.

It is located in the southeastern part of the province and is one of the few districts of the capital city that are not fully urbanized.

History

The history of Cieneguilla dates back to the first millennium AD, according to studies conducted by archaeologist Dr. Alberto Bueno Mendoza. The area was linked to Pachacámac and the towns of Lurín, and it is precisely during the height of the Tahuantinsuyo when it figured as the last stretch of the Qapak Ñan or Inca Trail that linked Pachacámac with Cusco, passing through the famous sanctuary of the Apu Nevado Pariaqaqa and the tambos of Jauja and Vilcashuamán. It is precisely in Cieneguilla where the access road to the Huarochirí province begins, an area with many tourist attractions.

In 1539 the area passed into the hands of the then mayor of Lima, Nicolás de Rivera El Viejo. Years later, he joined the province of Cañete to return to Lima according to the ordinance of Viceroy Luis de Velasco y Castilla.

A census carried out in the middle of the last century gives a population of half a thousand inhabitants, distributed in the area of Lurín, Manchay and Cieneguilla. In those years the area became famous due to the presence of bandits and highway robbers.

But it was during the War of the Pacific when it gained importance again after Chilean troops passed through Manchay to attack Lima, entering through the current district of La Molina.

In 1895, Casa Hacienda Cieneguilla was chosen as the headquarters of the rebel troops of Don Nicolás de Piérola.

Until 1960, La Casa Hacienda de Cieneguilla regained importance when its owner, Luis Ortiz de Zevallos, began a subdivision program with a view to converting it into a rural residential area. It was precisely this management that motivated the construction of the current access serpentine, replacing the old road that went up through the Manchay pampas.

The district was created on March 3, 1970, segregating from Pachacámac, by Decree Law No. 18166, in the government of President Juan Velasco Alvarado.

Geography

The district is located within the valley of the Lurín river. In this river, until the 1980s of the 20th century, there was a good extraction of shrimp. The Lurín Valley is the only one of the three valleys of Lima (Rímac - Chillón - Lurín).
