Chimonobambusa is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Poaceae family. It is native to eastern Asia and the Himalayas. It comprises 69 described species and of these, only 37 accepted.

Description

They are perennial, rhizomatous, or stoloniferous plants. Green leafy flower stalks. Culms ranging from 50 cm to 6 m tall; woody and persistent (monopodial); 3 cm in diameter; branched above. Culm-sheaths deciduous throughout (somewhat leathery, with very small blades). Internodes with hollow culms. Plants visibly armed (culm nodes with two generally spiny ridges). Leaves not aggregated, basal, with ear setae. Blade broad or narrow; pseudopetiolate. Bisexual plants, with bisexual spikelets; with hermaphrodite flowers. Indeterminate inflorescence (as indicated by bracts supporting spikelets).

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Makino and published in Botanical Magazine 28(329): 153. 1914. The type species is Chimonobambusa marmorea (Mitford) Makino.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 12, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 48. 4 ploid. Relatively "small" chromosomes.
