Cherkasy Oblast
The Cherkasy oblast (Ukrainian: Черкаська область, Cherkaska oblast or Черкащина, Cherkaschyna) is a central Ukrainian oblast. crossed by the Dnieper river. Its capital is Cherkasy.
Geography
Cherkasy Oblast is bordered to the west by Vinnitsa Oblast, to the north by Kiev Oblast, to the northeast by Poltava Oblast, and to the south by Kirovograd Oblast.
The oblast has many forests and in its territory, in Kaniv, there is the Shevchenko National Park (Шевченківський національний заповідник) dedicated to the poet Taras Shevchenko, which occupies an area of 2,500 ha.
Demographics
According to the 2001 Ukrainian census, the population of the oblast is spread almost evenly between urban and rural areas (53.7% and 46.3%, respectively).
By ethnic composition, Ukrainians make up the majority of the oblast's population (93.1%). Russians are the second largest ethnic group (5.4%), concentrated mainly in the city of Cherkasy.
By linguistic composition, the oblast is predominantly Ukrainian.
Economy
The economy of the oblast is predominantly agricultural. The main crops are wheat and sugar beets, although barley, corn, tobacco and hemp are also grown. Livestock also occupies a very important place in the Oblast's economy.
The industrial sector is mainly concentrated in Cherkasy, the capital and largest city of the oblast.
