Chad Gaylord Smith (Saint Paul, Minnesota, October 25, 1961) is an American musician best known for being the drummer for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, with whom he recorded 10 studio albums and of which he is a member from 1988 to the present. Smith is also the drummer for the hard rock band Chickenfoot and for the instrumental band Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats. Additionally, he has collaborated with numerous artists such as John Frusciante, Glenn Hughes, Jake Bugg, Dave Navarro, Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash, among others.

Throughout his career, Smith has received numerous awards. The readers of Rolling Stone magazine voted Chad the 13th greatest rock drummer of all time. Additionally, Spin magazine ranked Chad as the number 10 on the list of "The 100 Best Alternative Music Drummers"., as well as at number 10 on the list of "The 20 Best Drummers of the Last 25 Years", both lists published by Rhythm magazine. Chad was also named by DRUM! Magazine as "Funk Drummer of the Year" in a total of 12 years. In 2012, Chad was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Biography

Smith began playing drums at age 7. During his adolescence he had several jobs but none seemed to satisfy him since his only interest was to practice and perfect his playing skills. He graduated from Bloomfield Hill's Lasher High School. in the year 1980. He also attended the & # 34;Andover High School & # 34; and & # 34; Lahser High School & # 34;, graduating from the latter in 1980. While still in school, he left his house for a while. When he returned, his mother sent him to a boarding school. He worked a series of jobs while playing in various bands.

Later, at the age of 20, he moved to California, where his brother Brad lived, and ended up in Los Angeles, where he joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After playing in the Toby Redd band, Chad gained a very good reputation as a drummer. He was the last to audition for the Red Hot Chili Peppers with the reputation of 'eating drums for breakfast'. During the audition, Flea and Anthony Kiedis were pleasantly surprised by the power, skill and rhythm that this "giant" had. He ended up joining the band in March of 1989. Chad's style was a perfect fit for what they were looking for. However, according to Anthony Kiedis's autobiography, Scar Tissue, after his first audition for the band, Kiedis told him that he would be admitted to the band if he first shaved his head, as a test of his devotion to the band, but above all. Everything, because of Kiedis's aversion to Smith's rock and roll hair style (the singer compared it to the Guns N' Roses style; long hair and bandana), since it was not the image of the punk funk band. Smith returned the next day with his hair still in a bandana, however Anthony allowed him to stay, realizing his stubbornness and according to Flea, because he liked his funk-groove style. Smith's tenacity to keep his hair long was very great, probably due to discomfort with his receding, thus clarifying the reason why he almost always wears a beanie.

Though primarily known for his work as a drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smith is featured on more than 100 albums, not including those recorded with his current band. He has also traveled extensively around the world, as he performs drum meetups. He attended a series of meetings with one of his heroes, Deep Purple's Ian Paice. Chad develops a side project called "Chickenfoot" with former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony and famed guitarist Joe Satriani.

Former Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes recorded an album in Chad's “home” studio in late 2005/early 2006.

As a side note, Smith hates hot peppers.
