Cerro Blanco is a railway station that is part of Line 2 of the Santiago de Chile Metro. It is located underground, between the Cementerios and Patronato stations. It is located at the intersection of Avenida Recoleta and Santos Dumont, in the commune of Recoleta.

Environment and features

It has a medium flow of passengers, as it is close to several public, student and commercial services. More than 145 meters long, it was inaugurated as the northern terminal station of Line 2 (until the opening of the Einstein station) on September 8, 2004, as part of the first Metro extension plan with a view to the implementation of the Transantiago. The station has an average daily flow of 14,179 passengers.

In the immediate surroundings of the station is the Illustrious Municipality of Recoleta, the church and convent of Recoleta Dominica, which gives its name to the avenue and the commune. Also located in the surrounding area are the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile, the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Chile and the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Chile, the College Academy of Humanities and the Psychiatric Institute hospitals, Clinical at the University of Chile, San José and Roberto del Río Hospital as well as the Cancer Institute.

MetroArte

Inside the station there is one of the dioramas made by the artist Zerreitug.

This work, titled Piedras Tacitas, visualizes one of the rituals of the ancient Aconcagua Culture, more specifically a festival that took place annually in an area near Cerro Blanco. Some of the stones present at the scene were extracted directly from said hill.

It is currently being restored after the station suffered slight damage as a result of the social outbreak of October 2019.

Etymological origin

The station is located on the slopes of Cerro Blanco. This hill was used for a long time as a quarry, from which the rocks were obtained to build, for example, the Cal y Canto Bridge and the Santo Domingo church.
