Centi (symbol c) is an SI prefix indicating a factor of 10−2 or one hundredth part (1/ 100). The symbol, used in the metric system, was proposed in 1793 and adopted in 1795. The prefix comes from the Latin centum, meaning "hundred" (cf. century, hundred, percent, centennial). Since 1960, the prefix has been part of the International System of Units (SI). It is mainly used in combination with the meter unit to form the centimeter, a common unit of length.
