Celera Genomics is the name of an American company founded in May 1998 by Applera Corporation and J. Craig Venter, with the primary goal of sequencing and assembling the human genome within three years. To do this, they used the Shotgun method, based on breaking DNA into multiple pieces, cloning it, and searching for overlaps with bioinformatics applications.

In 2001, they presented their first draft of 5 genomes from different ethnic groups in the journal Science, including that of their director, Craig Venter
