Toponymy

The place name Cebrones has been associated with two possible etymologies. On the one hand, there are the linguists who associate it with Mozarabic anthroponymy, derived from the agricultural possessions that arose from the settlement of members of the Berber family of Sabrun ibn Sahib. On the other hand, there are those who associate its name with the brain. or with holly, placing his name among the more than a hundred place names in the Iberian Peninsula, such as Acebrón, Acibreira, Azibral, Azibreira, Azibreiro, Acibreiros, Cebral, Cebrero, Cebreros, Cebrones, Cevral, Cebreiro, Cebreiros, Cevriños, Cebriñeiras, Navacebrera or Vegacebrón. In the case of Cebrones del Río, its most probable etymon is that of the wild horse, not only because of the location of the municipality and the physical characteristics of its term, but also because of the bibliography of Strabo (2nd century AD) who reported on their hunting in the plain of the Páramo and that in the fourteenth century they were still hunted, according to the Book of hunting.

The Romans passed through this town and proof of this is the bridge over the Órbigo river, the bell tower of the church and in the town of San Martín de Torres, a pre-Roman castro; It is said that this town was a Roman villa, where the city of Bedunia or Baedunia was located.

This population currently has a river beach, camping areas, picnic area, sports and recreational area, etc.

It also has some paintings from the XVII century at least, recently restored, which were discovered after dismantling the main altar of church.
