Carmageddon
Carmageddon (play on words from the English car, "car", and Armageddon, "Armageddon") is a vehicular combat video game created in 1997 that stood out for including a significant proportion of violence in its gameplay. The main mission of the game is to finish the race or destroy the opponents' cars, however killing pedestrians is an incentive. In his time he suffered harsh criticism that ironically took him to the top sales positions. The game was produced by Stainless Software and published by Interplay and Sales Curve Interactive (SCi).
The game is based on director Paul Bartel's 1975 film, Death Race 2000, which starred Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine.
History
It is thought that the game is based on several films but mainly the beginning of all of them may be a story called The Racer that was released in 1956. The author was Ib Melchior and from this story Robert Thom and Charles Griffith wrote the script for the film Death Race 2000 directed by Paul Bartel in 1975.
In addition to Death Race 2000, another inspirational film for Carmageddon was Mad Max in which cars similar to those used in the game appear. So the game was started as "3D Destruction Derby" as a Stainless Software prototype. In 1995, Sales Curve Interactive signed on to publish the game that was to use the Mad Max license but ultimately used the Death Race 2020 license as a sequel to the original film, which introduced the ability to run over people in the game.
When the Death Race 2020 license also fell through, Sales Curve Interactive and Stainless Software made the decision to continue with the game anyway, without a license. The name "Carmageddon" and the designers were given freedom in the creation of the game.
Due to the censorship that occurred after the publication of the game for being bloody and not very educational, SCI decided to create a censored Carmageddon, this time, instead of flesh and blood pedestrians we must run over zombies. In many countries, uncensored gaming was prohibited, so getting hold of the original Carmageddon was not easy.
Description
At the beginning of the game one can select:
- a fast and weak car (Hawk) driven by Die Anna.
- a slower but tougher car (Red Eagle) driven by Max Damage.
To win Carmageddon you must complete all the races, and to complete them you can choose in 3 different ways:
- hit all pedestrians (which in this version are sprites)
- complete the Checkpoints
- destroy the remaining cars
It should be noted that the image of the driver appeared on the screen in a very successful way for the time, giving the sensation that it was a video inside the cabin, since he was talking and saying swear words (in English), you could see in real time, the driver can experience the shocks or braking of the car. When we braked the vehicle with the 'Instant Handbrake' powerup; Max or Anna vomited on the Prat-Cam (Close-Up Camera). This effect was not repeated in any Carmageddon after the Splat Pack.
The game has a difficulty above the average of games of the time, although it can be decreased. It also has a replay mode with several cameras to record and see the best moments. Another option to finish the game is to press Control-A, or Esc and then choose "Abort Race" (End Race) and thus the race in play will end, and you can choose another circuit if desired.
At the beginning you have some credits that will have to be used to prepare or repair the car by purchasing the necessary parts. If you do not have money, the game will end because you do not have enough capital. If this happens during the race, it continues to give the option of getting the money before finishing. Credits are obtained during the races and it does not matter how much time you spend getting money because with it you can buy spare parts to improve the car or get a new car from a rival that has been destroyed and is lower in the ranking.
The objective is to rise in the ranking, since this is what allows you to participate in one or another of the most prestigious races. At the beginning, our ranking will be 99.
Sequels
Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now
In 1998 the second part of Carmageddon titled Carpocalypse Now began to be sold, as a parody of the film "Apocalypse Now". In this second version we can only opt for Max Damage's car at the beginning but in its third version, Eagle MK3. In this game, once an opponent's vehicle has been destroyed, it can be purchased at a certain price. In this second part, the camera was no longer placed inside the car.
Did you mean:Al igual que la primera parte se podría acabar el juego de las 3 maneras.
Carmageddon TDR 2000
Carmageddon TDR (Total Destruction Racing) 2000 began to be sold at the end of 2000. Obviously the company that was in charge of producing it was SCI, but it was designed by Torus Games, which lost a lot of Carmageddon background and due to inclusions of a story, along with many changes in the gameplay, did not please fans of the classics very much.
Carmageddon TDR 2000 was very successful, so much so that a comic strip starring Max Damage was created, a comic told in 12 mini-chapters created by Tozzer.
Carmageddon 4
Although SCi announced that Carmageddon 4 would be developed by the end of 2005, production was cancelled. There is very little information about the reasons for the cancellation and why SCi is keeping development paralyzed. Information can be found in specialized forums or in fan clubs, although most of them may be rumors. The truth is that the future of this delivery is unknown and no statement has been made about this event since its cancellation.
For now, there is a game called "Crash Day" which uses the Carmageddon 4 graphics engine, so the excellent graphics and crashes of Crash Day will be at least what we will see in Carmageddon 4.
On May 23, 2011, the official website (Carmageddon.com) was reactivated showing a countdown that reaches zero on June 1, 2011. The website is registered to Square Enix, which acquired SCi in the past and therefore the rights to the saga (2)
Carmageddon: Reincarnation
After the cancellation of Carmageddon 4 Stainless Games Ltd recovered the rights to the franchise. He returned to the Carmageddon project with a technical and graphical revision of the original game, giving it the name Carmageddon: Reincarnation.
The game will have graphics updated to the power of current systems and the vehicles and scenarios will be more complex and detailed. Although the spirit of the game is to maintain the original essence, new vehicles, maps and items will be added that will modify the car or the physics rules during the game. Updates on the progress of the project are made on the official Carmageddon.com website.
With the intention of maintaining as much independence as possible in the project, Stainless Games Ltd announced the project on the crowdfunding page Kickstarter.com on May 8, 2012, achieving the goal of $400,000 on May 27 and obtaining a total of $625,143.
The game is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2013 and will be distributed through digital distribution platforms.
Extensions
Did you mean:Carmageddon "Splat Pack "
The game was so successful that Interplay created an expansion called Carmageddon Splat Pack in 1998, which contained new vehicles, pedestrians, and driving levels. The minimum patch requirements are: P90, 16 MB and MS-DOS 6.2 and the original Carmageddon installed on the computer. The graphic quality compared to the original game is raised (although the pedestrians are still sprites).
Did you mean: Los vehículos principales son versiones mejoradas de los vehículos seleccionables en el Carmageddon original, sus nombres son: Red Eagle 2 and Hawk Deluxe. The expansion was also censored and the human pedestrians were changed to zombies or robots. One of the most incredible levels is "Ring of Fire", where we can drive our vehicle in hell where Lucifer rests playing his favorite game (Carmageddon obviously).
The expansion supports 3dfx cards. The difficulty does not increase or decrease from the original game.
Did you mean:Carmageddon n#34;Max Pack "
This pack brings the original Carmageddon, the Splat Pack and other special features such as the Keyring (a leather keychain with a medal with the Carmageddon logo) and the Mousemat (a mouse pad with the image of the box of the first game). This version is censored so it is very difficult to obtain.
This pack was sold in some cases together with the "Carmageddon Level Pack 8", a pack that came with several levels, some utilities and cheat codes, most of which could be found on different websites.
Did you mean:Carmageddon Nosebleed Pack
This pack developed by SCi and Torus Games for Carmageddon TDR 2000 began to be sold in December 2000. The pack brings new vehicles and new maps. Also in the pack are several levels to play online.
Consoles
Carmageddon for Playstation
The first Carmageddon to be released for consoles was for Playstation in September 1999. This console version was produced and distributed by SCI and contained 10 brand new levels including the Aztec and the Ski resort, 10 vehicles created especially for Playstation and new missions with above-average difficulty.
Carmageddon for Playstation had Max Damage as the main character, but his vehicle this time was the Eagle MK3 with some changes to the body; Furthermore, Die Anna does not appear in the game, only her vehicle from Carmageddon 1 makes an appearance.
The graphic appearance is between that of the first version of Carmageddon for PC and the second version. To avoid criticism, human pedestrians were changed to zombies and, to improve gameplay, several game styles were included that allowed two simultaneous players. The game was not as successful as the various versions of Carmageddon for PC.
Carmageddon 64
This version of Carmageddon for Nintendo 64 was released in 1999. Carmageddon 64 was characterized by having most of the vehicles from Carmageddon 2 with only 1 original car (the ice cream vehicle) and one car from Carmageddon 1 (the Caddy Fat Cat driven by Otis).
The levels were the same as Carmageddon 2 but with some small changes, and a level from Carmageddon 1 was also included. The missions were completely original and were not as difficult as those in Carmageddon for PC. At the beginning of the game you could choose the Eagle MK3 (driven by Max Damage) or the Hawk from Die Anna from Carmageddon 2. The flesh-and-blood pedestrians were replaced by zombies that, when you hit them, destroyed your vehicle a little. In Germany, surprisingly, zombies were changed to Dinosaurs with green blood.
Like the Playstation, it could be played in pairs through different game modes. A special feature was that you could play an "Arcade" where we did all the races in a row and if we lost we had to start from 0 and a training version set in an original level where we taught how to play.
As for the technical section: the graphic quality was very low compared to other Nintendo 64 games and most of the levels had very little detail.
Carmageddon for Game Boy Color
This Carmageddon was released in early 2000 through Titus' merger with SCi Entertainment Group. It had the same vehicles as Carmageddon 2 and like most versions of Carmageddon the main vehicle was the Eagle MK3 driven by the sickly Max Damage. Die Anna's vehicle was the Eagle MK3 with orange color.
There is only one view of the game that is from above, although it is different from the classic view, after a short period of time you get used to it. Pedestrians are either zombies or robots, depending on the version of the game. There are races and missions completely created for this game. The levels are original and not very extensive. The graphics section is good and fits into the game itself, although it goes from being in 3D to being an aerial view.
The game only accepts a single player and there are not many gameplay options. An interesting aspect is that you could choose several languages, including Spanish.
Carmageddon 2D
This new Carmageddon began selling at the beginning of August 2005. It was one of the five finalists of the "E3 2005 Editors' Choice Awards'.
This version was developed by Kayak Interactive and is only for mobile phones that support Java games (most mobile phones). It is a somewhat bland game with GameBoy Color Carmageddon style graphics.
The game has 6 different game modes, 4 original cars (the car driven by Max is a renovated Eagle MK3 called "Hellfire") and 36 completely new races. The view is from above, GTA2 style.
Carmageddon 3D
It is the second Carmageddon for mobile phones, this time the game is in 3D and is exclusively compatible with phones that have the Symbian Operating System. It can be purchased through a website by sending a text message to a short number. It has several cars and tracks and it does have pedestrians but they are zombies. The sound is characteristic of Carmageddon 2.
Carmageddon for Gizmondo
Gizmondo was a portable console with 3D gaming capabilities that went bankrupt in February 2006 without being distributed in Spain. One of the 40 (more or less) games they were going to release was Carmageddon, a remake of the first version of Carmageddon with all its graphical power and playability on a portable console.
Music
In Carmageddon I and II, the soundtracks that have been used for the games have been by the groups: Fear Factory and Iron Maiden.
