Carlos Tartiere Stadium (1932)
The Carlos Tartiere Stadium was a soccer field in the city of Oviedo in Asturias, Spain. It hosted the matches that Real Oviedo played at home between 1932 and 2000, and was named in honor of Carlos Tartiere Alas-Pumariño, the club's first president. The stadium was one of the venues for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, hosting three Group B matches. It also hosted four matches for the Spanish team (three friendlies plus a qualifying match for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games).
History
Named Buenavista Stadium at the beginning because it was located in the Buenavista neighborhood, it was inaugurated on April 24, 1932 with a match between the national teams of Spain and Yugoslavia, with a victory for Spain for 2-1. The first goal in the stadium was scored by Isidro Lángara, Real Oviedo striker.
It had the particularity at that time that the main grandstand was covered with a visor of more than 100 meters in length without any support column in front, the first to be built in Spain of these characteristics, the work of the engineer Ildefonso Sánchez del River. In 1954, it was sold to the Oviedo City Council, which has owned it ever since. In June 1958 his name was changed to that of the founder and first president of the club, Carlos Tartiere. On June 4, 1969, the field's artificial lighting was inaugurated during a friendly match between Real Oviedo and Real Madrid C.F..
It was rebuilt for the 1982 World Cup, in which it was one of the official venues, hosting the group B matches together with El Molinón de Gijón. In this way, its capacity went from 20,000 people to 23,500 The opening match after the works faced Real Oviedo with the Chilean national team, on April 29, 1982. It ended with a goalless tie.
In 1998, to comply with UEFA regulations and improve safety in soccer fields, seats were added to almost the entire field so that the capacity was reduced to 16,485 people (13,605 seats and 2880 standing). This fact led to the need to build a new soccer field for the city with enough capacity for all the fans.
On May 20, 2000, Real Oviedo played its last match at the Carlos Tartiere against Real Sociedad de Fútbol. The stadium was finally demolished in 2003. The city's Conference Center, designed by Santiago Calatrava, was built on the land occupied by the stadium and its surroundings.
